“PATRONISE THE BLIND.”

TO THE EDITOR.

Sir, —I should like to add my approval of the letter of condemnation appearing in your paper recently under the heading of ‘ A Nasty Letter.’ The letter written by Mr Clutba Mackenzie left a nasty taste in the mouth. Is the Jubilee Institute so hard up that it is jealous of a blind person working for himself and showing some independence of spirit? Is not the Jubilee Institute supposed to train blind men and women so that they may be self-supoprting ? They cannot all command influence which will help to.secure them secretaryships at institutions carrying the fine salary of £6OO a year. As one who has-held the position of president of a committee to raise funds in aid of the Institute for the Blind, I feel that Mr Mackenzie has gone out of his way to cast an aspersion by way of unwarranted insinuation against an honest and unfortunate man. Mr Mackenzie’s letter was uncalled for, and well deserved the rebuking comments which appeared.—l am, etc.. Sympathiser. June 11. [Mr Clutha Mackenzie’s letter began with the statement “So many inquiries have reached me,” and ended as follows:—“May I make it clear that we raise no objection to a blind man selling writing pads from door to door, provided that the article in question is of good quality and reasonably priced, and that there is no suggestion that the profits go to the blind as a whole.”—Ed. E.S.]
