ST. JOHN AMBULANCE BRIGADE

[COKXKIBU’I'ED.] The Hampden Nursing Cadets report that the meetings for the year have been smarted with Miss M'Kerrow and Miss Thomson in. charge. The attendance is very encouraging and several hew member* were welcomed. It has been found necessary, owing to the varying ages and advancement of the girts, to divide them into three groups, so that all may work to the greatest advantage. The seniors are concentrating on home musing, those who passed their second examination last year will take both first aid and Home nursing, whilst the younger and new members will take the preliminary course in first aid. ‘ After the members had been arranged in their various groups, bandaging practice was gone on with, and later the division was inspected by the officers. A full, parade of the Hillside Ambulance Cadets mustered at the Hillside Social- Hall last Thursday, the occasion being, the cadet competition , for the Junior Cadet Shield, the Senior Cadet Cup; and the Roller Bandaging Shield

Four teams competed for the Junior Shield, the -winners turning up in J. Crawford, R. Hayman, J. Hartstonge, and E. Dowland, who gained 103 points. Second place was filled by the team under M. Millar with 101 points. The shield was presented to the winners by Lady Divisional Superintendent, Mrs Fox.

In the competition for the Senior Cadet Cup there were four teams competing, and the event went to the team led by Corporal J. Petherick, J. Crawford, TV Ellis, and L. Wallis, who scored 143 points. The second place, 142 points, went to Sergeant Honeybone’s team. The winners’ victory was all the more .meritorious on account of the fact that the team had to secure the services of two juniors who had had no practice with the others. Mrs J. G. Ross presented the cup to the winners. The Roller Bandaging Competition was won by Corporal Mosely with the possible number of points (30L Corporal Mosely has still to use crutches as a result of the fractured leg he sustained recently, but they in no way interfered with his work with the rollers. Second place went to M. Millar with 29J. points. The judge spoke in glowing terms of. the exceptionally high standard of work in -this event, every little detail had to be considered to separate the competitors. Corps Superintendent J. C. White acted as judge for the first aid work during the evening, and Corps- Officer J. G. Ross judged the transport. After inspection the combined parade accorded the visitors a cadet haka.

Following the formation- of a nursing division in Kaikorai, a strongly supported movement is on foot to start an Ambulance Division in the district, and a meeting was held in the local theatre on .Monday evening to further this project. The chair was taken by Mr W, Sinclair, who briefly outlined the aims and objects hoped for. The district staff and corps were represented by Superintendent T. Belworthy and J. C. White, and Rev. FI. R. 'Dimer also spoke strongly in support.

After discussion it was decided to go ahead, and the furthering of the work was left in. the hands of Messrs 11. B. Arnott and A. Crighton, who will rill the positions of acting superintendent and ambulance officer. Mr Cook offered the free use of a room in the Rosella Tea Rooms for meetings, and those present arranged to meet on Monday nights for practice and instruction. On Sunday next a party from Dunedin division intends visiting Kaitangata to assist the local division, which was termed last year, with stretcher work and drill. The Kaitangata division is showing commendable interest and initiative, and it is hoped that by next district, competitions it will be represented amongst (he competitors. All members are reminded that the annual church parade on the occasion of St. John’s Day will take place at 'St. Paul’s Cathedral on Sunday 24th inst.. when a full parade is expected.- Divisions will receive further 'particulars through the usual channels.
