SUPERANNUATION AND EMPLOYMENT.

TO THE EDITOR.

Sir,—“ By Their Deeds ” says that quite a number of your readers are amazed at a certain body employing a superannuated man. Why, this has been going on for a number of years, and is still going on in spite of letters appearing in your paper from time to time. 1 think this practice is quite unwarranted, and those people who employ these men ought to be ashamed of themselves and boycotted. Take the cases of the races held recently. They employ one superannuated man who, 1 understand, draws within tho vicinity of £5 a day. That same gentleman was also engaged by the Dunedin Show people, and he has authority for engaging men, the majority of whom are also superannuated. I think the racing people made a feeble attempt to defend their cause some time ago, when there were quite a number of letters appearing in your paper on this subject, by stating that it was very difficult to obtain the services of a really good man to fill the position. What nonsense! 1 would say that was a slur on the intelligence of the unemployed. Then, what about married couples with no family both occupying positions, and both drawing good salaries? I cannot understand why the unemployed do not take this matter up. I know it will take money to engage ha]l and speakers, and also to engage men to canvass with petitions, but I feel sure that thousands of people would sign.—l am, etc., J CSTICE. June H.
