CLASSIC NAMES STAND

WINE AGREEMENT BEING REDRAFTED LONDON, May 29. Although the wine conference has not ended, well-informed circles state that the agreement now being drafted permits the continuance of classic names at present employed. “ Australia carried the day against France,” said a commentator. “ Novertheless; Australian and other wine countries would be well advised to develop thir own wine names, because Franco is extending her influence by treaties. Later there will probably be many countries friendly to Australia and indifferent about wine nomenclature, but commercially allied to France.” Mr I. H. Seppelt, of Adelaide, who is here with Mr J. R. Seppelt in order to study the wine industry in Europe and North Africa, declared that it would cost Australia hundreds of thousands of pounds to popularise new names. This was impracticable at present. French complaints which had arisen only since Australia had become the biggest supplier to Britain, .were unjustified if the name of the country was prefixed to the name of the wine.
