RAILWAY SERVICES

ROILING STOCK IMPROVEMENTS [P« United Pits* Association.] WELLINGTON, June 9. Mr G. H. Mackley, general manager of railways, to-day supplemented the statements made yesterday in regard to rolling stock. He said that while the periodical overhaul and repairs to freight stock had always been well maintained much bad been done during the last two years to improve the standard of passenger seating, both in the cars in service and cars in con* struction. Tile improved financial position of the railways had made more money available for the purpose of improving the seating, and it was the desire of the board to continue the policy of improved seating within the financial limits available. With regard to the purpose of the S.O.S. motors, he said that this road, service would be supplementary to the train service The time-table oilserved by the S.O.S. would be continued and the fares would be the same. The question whether the board woqld extend its operations so far as road services were concerned depended entirely on the merits and necessities of the case. While the board had been able to avail itself of.the offer to purchase the business of the S.O.S. Motors there wore no grounds for assuming that the board would embark upon a policy of general absorption of road sesrvices.
