MUSIC AT THE SAVOY
The most popular of baritones on Dunedin concert platforms, Mr Denis Dowling, has been again engaged by the Savoy to entertain its patrons for one week. Mr Dowling’s appearances in the city are very infreuent, but each is marked by a fresh interest in the progress of this remarkable singer. Since he first came into the limelight his voice and style have shown marked improvement, and he has become one of Otago’s most sought after vocalists. His reputation has steadily increased, and the confidence shown by the Savoy when it first engaged him has since been proved to have been more than justified. With an impeccable preservation of quality, Mr Dowling has become very facile in interpretation, and the close attention which he has paid to presentation makes him a most versatile singer. His baritone voice of beautifully mellow and rich quality and his interpretative ability enable him to present a programme of unusual diversity. Whether in a sweetly artistic or the most robust and virile songs, his interpretations are vimful, with sincerity and faithfulness. For next week’s recitals he has chosen songs of wide appeal, each number suiting his rare quality of voice. The programme includes ‘ Nirvana ’ (Stephen Adams), ‘ To-morrow ’ (Frederick Keel), ‘ Goodble ’ (from ‘ White Horse Inn ’), ‘ The Carnival’ (Molloy). ‘The Minstrel Boy’ (Moorel, ‘Who is Sylvia?’ (Schubert). Miss llita Holmes (piano), Mr Bees M'Connaohy (violin), and Mr Lloyd Hunter (’cello) are a gifted trio, and they, too, always reveal admirable taste in their programmes. Both light and classical compositions make an entertainment artistically shaded and varied, Mr M‘Connachy, whoso violin solos are a decided attraction, will present the fascinating ‘ Hondo ’ by Mozart, arranged by Kreisler. The floral decorative schemes at the Savoy are of perennial beauty, and the cosy halls will be very bright with a wonderful display of chrysanthemums and marigolds.
