KINDERGARTEN ASSOCIATION
COUNCIL MEETING The monthly meeting of_ the council of the Free Kindergarten Association was held on Thursday, afternoon.-. There were present the president (Mrs Ewing), in the chair, Lady Allen, Lady; Sidey, Mesdames Dykes, G, Fitzgerald,; Glendiniug, Haggitt, Halsted, Phillips,; Shand, Smith, Taverner, Wright, and Misses Kelsey and Ulrich. Mrs Glendiiiing welcomed, the newly-elected president (Mrs R. A. Ewing), and assured her she would have the sympathetic support of every member of the council during her term of office. The following minute which had been prepared at- the request of members at the annual meeting was approved by acclamation for insertion in the minutes :—“That the Dunedin, Free Kindergarten Association place oh record in the minutes its sincere appreciation of the very valuable services of Mrs D. Phillips, the retiring president, who has devoted herself wholeheartedly to the furthering of kindergarten ideals for thirteen years, during seven of which she has carried out the onerous duties of president, and its ■ pleasure that Mrs Phillips is to.remain a member of Hhe council.”
The directors’ reports showed that the health of the children was much improved, the recent epidemics having abated considerably. A donation of a gramophone : had been received at the Reynolds (Kindergarten from Mrs -M-Kenzie, Dr Hall, and Messrs Lamb, Hudson. imd.Hazlett. and was proving great boou-in the nursery there. A; kindergarten, band -had been purchased with a donation from Mrs Theomm for tlie bigger children in that,kindergarten, and would he a very popular means of musical .education. Mr Vernon Griffiths,, had promised , to visit a kindergarten and -give a demonstration; of how to teach band-playing to young children. A number of children left the kindergartens at the beginning of the new. term to, go .to the, primary, schools, and a ; number -of “■three-year-olds’' had been admitted from the “ waiting ”, Ijsts; but these lists were still very large, and it' was .felt, that the total roll numbers would have to bo further increased. The Mothers’: Club; at St. Kilda had organised a very successful social evening, and had,handed over £lO 10s to the .local, committee with the request ithat ;this mo.ney .might be used to start a building fund for that district. It was reported that the proceeds of the . bookstall at r. the Winter Show amounted to £lB 6s Bd. Appreciation of the work of Mrs Gilkison and of Mrs Rose was expressed, and ‘ letters of thanks were sent. A donation of £lB from the Archerfield Service Committee towards,. Sti Kilda. Kindergarten was ■ .received,' .and , a(letter ; of. thanks sent ;to the T'nembers.-
