CARNATIONS FROM SEED

There is much to be said for the raising of carnations from seed, for if seed is procured from a reliable source, one is certain of getting a few really good ones (writes “ Lorna,” in the ‘ Manawatn Daily Times ’). Among those which bloom the same year as sown is the carnation chabaud, in all its beautiful colourings of yellow, rose, salmon, rod, pink, and white, with largo, full, and refined flowers. Then we have the useful Marguerite type, and the perpetual tree carnation which grows into a large and handsome plant, producing a great supply of blooms. A point of great importance from the flower-gatherer’s outlook, is the volume of handsome sprays of bloom which are borne by a seedling carnation as compared with the layered plant, as the latter rarely carries more than one spike of bloom the first year, whereas an armful mav be gathered from the seedling. A few plants may produce single flowers, but these are always useful for cutting.
