ACCIDENTS AND DEATHS

FALL INTO FORECASTLE. An inquest into the death of Alfred Osborne, aged forty-nine, who died on May 23 following a fall down the companionway into the forecastle of the Union Company’s steamer _ Karepo, which was being fumigated with powerful gas, was concluded by the coroner, Mr F. K. Hunt, S.M., at Auckland. The coroner said that his finding was that death itself had taken_ place as the result of bronchitis, following burns. He would leave his verdict open as to what had caused the deceased to fall down tli© companionway. There was not sufficient evidence to determine whether ho had slipped and fallen or whether he had fallen as the result of being seized with sudden dizziness through the inhalation of gas. Witness had said they regarded it as unnecessary for men working in the open to wear masks. As a result he was unable" to add a rider concerning the method to be adopted in future. STRUCK BY FALLING LIMB. Crushed by a falling limb of a bluegum tree which was being trimmed, Mrs Roland Graham, of Tolaga Bay, was severely injured. . Seven men had difficulty in extricating her. Her condition yesterday was reported to be fairly comfortable. BOY FATALLY INJURED. A verdict in accordance with the ■ medical evidence was returned at the inquest at Wellington on the boy Claussen, who was killed by a lorry after a fall from a bicycle. The evidence showed that the boy was attempting to pass the lorry when the bicycle skidded on the surface of the road, which was greasy after the recent rain. The coroner said that it was a pure accident, no blame attaching to the driver of the lorry.
