TENNIS CHAMPIONSHIPS

CONCLUDING EVENTS The concluding events in the South Island lawn tennis championships were played at the Anderson’s Bay courts this morning. In the semi-final of the ladies’ doubles handicap Misses D. Hart and Fleming had a creditable win over Misses Pattisou and White* 9-5. The winners came up to the net much more often than their opponents, and Miss Hart’s net work was particularly good. Misses Pattison and White hit too hard, and their combination was not equal to that of the winners. Brilliant work at the net by Watson was largely responsible for his and Miss Fleming’s victory over Black and Mrs M'Dougall in the semi-final of the mixed doubles handicap. Black also got in some good net work, but he was not given the opportunities that came to Watson. The winners combined better than Black and Mrs M'Dougall, and Watson’s services and smashes wore too much lor his opponents. Ho was ably backed up in deep court play by Miss Fleming. Watson and Miss Fleming then met Philiipps and Miss White in the final. This match was keenly contested, and Watson was not given the opportunities at the net that he received in the earlier game. This game was not so forceful as the semi-final had been, and there was a great deal of overhard hitting by both sides. Watson’s service again enabled him to gain many points, and his smashing was effective. The winners had the better combination. , MIXED DOUBLES HANDICAP. —-Third Hound.— Watson and Miss Fleming (owe 30) heat J. D.
