NOTES ON THE EVENTS

Gay Fashion. Radiant Knight, and On Watch were the only ones at all well supported for the Trial Stakes. Larkaway missed the jump-out, and Gay Kasuion quickly hit the front from On AVatch, Joy Bridge, Radiant Knight, and Marceline. They ran m fairly close order along the back. Larkaway and Star Tractor ivere five lengths back. Gay Fashion was still in charge crossing the top, but dropped back suddenly. On AVatch was juss dear of Radiant Knight entering the i c.-iight where Joy Bridge started her run, while Marcel AVavc challenged on the outside. In ;i good finish, On Watch won by half a length, Marcel AVave failing to reach Joy Bridge by a quarter of a"length. The winner’s form was a marked improvement on her Lawrence running. * * * * After causing delay, Lady M'Kcuna got 1 the worst of the start for the Beaumont Handicap, and the hot favourite, Martis, showed the way out to Crossbow. They were closely followed by Miss Marco and Margaret Birney out of the straight. AVith the exception of Lady M'Kenna, the field was bunched along the back, but at the far turn, Martis and Crossbow, together, opened out a two lengths’ lead. Martis was first into the straight. Getting an uninterrupted run on the outer, Miss Marco challenged, but just failed to reach Martis. Crossbow was two lengths away, with Lady MTvenna coming fast. * * » * The Dnukeld Trot was mi interesting race. The favourite, Stormbell, was making a forward move half a mile from home, but was not p.-Wninent over the later stages. The winner turned out to be the Invercargill-trained Slump. Rosaleen was slow to move, and Knowledge started best of the first division, leading Wefet Star out of the barrier. When the field had settled down, Knowledge was showing the way to Imperial Bingen, AA 7 cst Star, Doncliff, and Maybird, Knowledge broke up when turning into the hack, and Imperial Bingen took up the running from Maybird. Slump put in an appearance three furlongs from home, and led Maybird and AVehr Bingen into the straight. In a fine finish Slump beat Maybird by a lengtli, AA’cbr Bingen failing to reach Maybird by a nose. « » * * Only three started in . the Easter Handicap, for which. Carnot carried more than half the investments. Margaret Birney was smartest away, and was quickly joined by Gay Fashion, which started wide out. As the trio turned into the back stretch, Margaret Birney was still in charge from Gay Fashion, with Carnot moving up. The leaders swung wide at the far bend, letting Carnot through on the rails, Carnot was first into line for home. Gay Fashion was already beaten, and Margaret Birney’s rider made only a slight effort to race Carnot over the last bit. It was an easy win for the favourite, * * » » The finest finish of the two _ days’ racing on the circuit was seen in the five-furlong dash, the President’s Hack Handicap, for which Nanette was electee! a much better favourite than Broadfield. The field was sent away to a straggling line, AVild Berry and Solanum being slow to move. Starting with her usual smartness, Nanette jumped out dear of Broadfic-ld. At the far turn 'Nanette was joined by Joy Bridge, and they wore a, length ahead of Broadfield and (Miss Marco. Joy Bridge was finished with before the straight was reached. Nanette was first into line for home, but was soon challenged by Little Queen, who came fast on the outer. A great finish. The judge was unable to separate Nanette and Little Queen, while Brqadficld was only a, neck away, with Miss Marco a head hack.

After Martis had won the Molyneux Handicap in convincing style lie was disqualified, as his rider (W. Brodic) weighed in 21b short. The hoy was carrying over -3st of lead, and when he returned to the paddock he complained that he could not carry the dead weight. The, weighing-in was witnessed by the president and stipendiary steward (Mr Gordon), and several other officials. Despite Martis’s easy win. disqualification was the only course, and the dividend was paid out on Green Cloth. In a rather restricted betting race Umtali was made a much better favourite than the Lawrence winner, Umtali. From a, good line Green Cloth showed out from Lady M'Tvenna. while Carnot failed to go with them over the early stages. Green Cloth and Lady M'Kcnna were together, a length in front of Unir tali, going past the stand. Martis, hard held, was several lengths back. Green Cloth shot to the front, and opened out a two lengths’ lead from Lady M'Kenna, Umtali. and Carnot, in line, down the back. At the far turn Martis moved up, and the field bunched. Green Cloth was first into line for home. Ridden vigorously, Martis challenged on the rails, and, quickly getting Lady M'Kenna’s measure, won comfortably by a length, with Umtali a j neck awav, and Lady M'Kenna a length ; and a-half back. Brodie, on Martis, rode with patience and excellent judgment. Martis won easily, and a bigger weight would not have stopped him. * * * * Horsemanship won the Electric Trot for Imperial Bingen, who was not supported to'the extent his good displays

deserved. The public went so idb fo 1 * Thrift, with Cytheria-as second choice* Massey Maid broke up at the stair,; and Cytheria and Imperial Bingen went away fast. AVith a round to go they were leading Logan Fay and Rosaleeru When the back stretch was entered! Imperial Bingen joined Cytheria, uikl Thrift moved up behind them. Ih' B pair drew right away from the field.; Imperial Bingen hit the front at the far turn, and opened out a two lengthslead. Cytheria’s rider was hard_ at it down the straight,' but Tmncrial Bingen,: who was ridden w]th judgment, drew away to win easily. Thrift tired over the last furlong, and the little-favoured Lucky Harold got up to boat him by a nose.

On Watch won a double by leading in the Railway Handicap, which was reduced to a one-dividend trace, from start to finish. Dancing Days, the favourite, was unable to go with the leaders after the first furlong, and Crossbow was the only one to seriously, challenge the winner, who beat Crossbow by a neck.
