PORTOBELLO REGATTA
SUCCESSFUL EASTER FIXTURE LIGHT BREEZES AND SUNNY WEATHER The animal Portobello Uegalta was held at Lower Portobello yesterday in line weather, the water being calm ami a light north-easterly wind making it ideal lor yacht and speed boat racing. There was a large number of visitors along the road and on the bank, and the programme included some interesting races The sailing race for yachts over 20ft was the main event of the day, and throughout the race the interest of spectators was keen. The outboard motor race received only two entries, Firefly and Sunfishcr, the former securing first place in the three heats, although it seenfkl that Suntisher was handicapped a little unfairly. A good deal of interest attached to the girls’ and boys’ dinghy races, and it was rather disappointing that only small entries were handed in. The motor boat races presented a fine spectacle, and delighted most of those who witnessed them. _ The fishermen’s motor boat race, a big event at most regattas, received no entries at all. During the afternoon three members of the Byrd Antarctic Expedition were present in one of the expedition’s outboard boats, and they made several short trips for the benefit of children. The racing course was in full view the whole time. Once round was exactly a mile. The following were the. officials:— Messrs P. W. Moss (commodore), T. Armstrong (secretary and treasurer), A. 1).
