CRACKERS AND HECKLING
The explosion of huge crackers, combined with the severe heckling of the speakers, caused an adjournment for a quarter of an hour of the intor-univor-sity debate in the Choral Hall on Saturday night. While tho chairman (Bishop Wost-Watson) and the debaters were in retirement much of the element responsible for the rowdyism left the hall for other spheres of activity, and the debate was continued in circumstances much more favourable to the official speakers. The debate was won by Otago University (N. S. Woods and J. A. Stallworthy! with 161 points, with Victoria, College (G. R. Prnwlcs and W. J. Mountjoy) second with 160 points. For the best speaker of the evening Mountjoy and Stallworthy were declared 'equal. The subject was ‘ That State Interference in New Zealand in Industry and Commerce Should bo Discouraged.’ In the first debate Victoria College defeated Auckland University College, and in the second Otago gained more points than Canterbury College. EIGHT-OARED RACE. Tlic ’Varsity ciglit-oared race resulted : ’Wellington 1 Canterbury 2 Auckland 3 Won by a length and a-half; with four lengths between second and third. The winners led all the way.
