AFTER THE FLOOD
RELIEF WORK PROCEEDING CLEARING THE LEITH Bight through the holidays, Sunday included, the staff of the city engineer’s department has been busily engaged in clearing the bed of the Leith of the debris ami stones brought down by tho flood, and similar work is being done by the Harbour Board stall' in its portion of the stream towards the month. Owing to the water in purls ot tho area served by the Ross Creek still being a little discoloured, a supply is being delivered by means ol carts to householders. 'Those at tho Central Reliel Bureau in tho Queen's Buildings arc continuing to provide relict in the shape ol food and clothing, though the demand is now easing oil considerably. It should not be long before llio demand ceases lor immediate necessities in tho way of food, clothing, and bedding.
CONCERT AT EMPIRE THEATRE. Xu loss than To 7 lUs was at a oonoort which was bold at the, Empire Theatre last night in aid of the ilood relict fund, towards which that amount will ho handed. Groat credit is due to those who organised and those who took part in the concert. An excellent and varied programme was presented, including vocal and musical items of discriminating choice. The Empai'e 'theatre- Symphonic Orchestra was augmented for the occasion and no fewer than thirtytwo players gave of thijir best- Under the capable- baton of Mr ( harlcs At os they rendered ■'William 'Jell,’ ‘Egyptian Ballot,’ and ‘March of the Gladiators' in impressive style. One of the choicest vocal items of the evening was the singing hv Mr G. Lawrence (ol the Musical Tollies, now appearing at the Empire) ol ‘Ships '.I hat Never Como Home.’ while another very popular item was the cornet solo, ‘ The Lost Chord,’ by Mr J. Barker, to organ aecotnpnuinioni. 31r (J. Avos displayed his skill in his effectivo rendering ol two violin solos. ‘ H nmorcskc ’ and ‘ Souvenir.’ Misses Sybil and Loma Baker gave a delightful rendering of the pi an 10 duet, ‘Second Rhapsody (Listz). ‘ The Clown’ was the title „f a 't-lHim musical monologue contributed hv Miss Anita Wmkol m her best stvie.’ and songs were given by Miss Eva, Scott, Mr R. B.
