THE EVENTS DESCRIBED

GIESELER’S STABLE TO THE FORE. [By St. Clair.] The heavy ram which fell throughout Southland on Friday night and Saturday morning until nearly midday seriously affected the success of the opening day’s racing of the Riverton Racing Club’s three-day meeting. The attendance was still good, hut the gate receipts fell from £1,420 2s last year to £1,207 7s, and the totalisator turnover showed a decrease of The course was in wonderful condition considering the heavy rain, and did cut up nearly as badly as expected, and improved as the afternoon progressed. A feature of the day’s sport was the success of Wingatui-trained horses, six of them winning, and no fewer than three from C. Gieseler’s stable. This makes Gieseler’s lead in the list of winning trainers a very hard one to catch. After the Cup an inquiry was held into King Balboa crossing Some Roso and Overhaul at the top of the straight,

and after an adjournment “till after the] last race L. J. Ellis, rider of King Bal-1 baa, was suspended for one month, j This sentence is nil the more a severe ] one as young Ellis had several important engagements, including rides on Silver Paper, Beau Geste, and Pink Coat at Riccarton, and the enforced spell will also probably cost him his chance of heading the list of winning riders for the season. Mr MTvor’s starting was good.

The weather looked like clearing up when the machine closed on the betting for the Trial Handicap, for horses that have neYer won a race at a totalisator meeting, and on his Waimate Form Claret Cup was sent out better fancied than Banner Boy, Red Boa, or Barney Google, who were evenly backed. From a good start Haulage and Eleanor Boling were tho first to show out, hut before going a furlong Red Boa ran to the front, and he led Eleanor Boling, Haulage, and Flash alojig the back. Red Boa led Eleanor Boling, Haulage, and Flash round tho far turn, with. Polling Day next. At tho home turn Bed Boa was just in front of Eleanor Boling, with Haulage and Polling Day almost in line, and Barney Google next. Red Boa and Eleanor Boling were well clear at the distance fighting out a good struggle, and then the Central Otagoowned Barney Google, wide on the outside, put in a good run and got up to beat Eleanor Bojiug by a neck, with Red Boa a head awy third. Banner Boy, Claret Cup, and Barn Door were next. Investments (£1,297J (last j’ear £2,122). ’ * * * *

All started in tho Waiau Steeplechase for horses that have never won a steeplechase at a totalisator meeting, and the leniently-treated Kapuna was sent out a better favourite than Calibration or the bracketed pair Ngarata and Squatter, with Erin-go-Bragh and Taramoa the best fancied of the others. Ngarata and Erin-go-Bragh ied a well-strung-out field to the water jump in front of the stand, where Calibration and Taramoa fell, and the favourite joined the leaders. He then went to the front, and led Ngarata and Erin-go-Bragh the remainder of the way, winning very easily by three lengths from Ngarata. Erin-go-Bragh, who jumped carefully throughout, was j soyds away third. Balvaseo was clo-c up fourth, and Squatter next. French Fleet fell at the post and rails (fourth fence), and Paradcr, after having a life at the same fence, baulked at the first gorso fence in the second round. Investments, £1,399 (£2,006).

„Tu the field of five in the Aparinm Handicap Black Duke was made a slightly better favourite than Waving Corn, the pair being much better fancied than Coomassio or Battle Flag. From a moving-in start Waving Corn, on the rails, was the first to show out, and over the first furlong Eaton Bells and C'oomassic were running next. Then Coomassie ran into second place, and three furlongs from homo joined Waving Com, Black Duke moving up on tho outside of Eaton Bell. Cooinassie was slightly in .front of Waving Corn, with Eaton Bells next at the home turn. In a great finish down the straight Waving Corn lasted the better and gained a neck advantage at the post. Battle Flag was fourth, a head in front of tho favourite, who did not finish with his usual brilliancy. Investments, £2,1314 '£2,3714).

Attractive Lad} - , Vine Grove, and Town Major were withdrawn from the Longwood Hack Handicap, for which Red Sea was made a slightly bettor favourite than Membo, and Killorna was much better hacked than any of the others. Rod Sen, Killorna, and Membo were the early leaders, and this was the order of the leading division until after rounding the far turn, where Lucky Maid ran into third place, and Membo appeared to get into a bad position. At the turn into thej straight .Membo got a good opening, and followed Red Sea and Killorna into tiro run home. Before reaching the distance post Membo challenged Red Sea, and in a good race to the post just beat her by "a short head. Cupid’s Dart finished well a length away third, and was followed by Filosol, Livky Maid, and Paris. Investments, £*,367 (£2,991).

All started in the Riverton Gold Cup, and the coupled pair Queen Balboa and King Balboa were the popular fancy. Town Bank, who went out heavily bandaged, with Circulation, Overhaul, and Wingatui were the best backed of the others. From an excellent start Beacon Light led past the stand from Overhaul and Some Rose, Queen Balboa running very wide out of the straight.. Going past the seven-furlong post Beacon Light was showing the way to Tardy and Overhaul, and before reaching the six-furlong post Some Rose and Tembroney had run up into second and third places. Tembroney and ’ Tardy led Beacon Light round the far turn, whore Overhaul and Circulation were lying next, and there was no change passing the three-furlong post. R icing to tho homo turn, Tembroney retired beaten, and Some -Rose led Circulation, Overhaul, King Balboa, and Wingatui into the run home. Some Rose then retired, and King Balboa and Circulation led Overhaul'dnd Wingatui to the distance. The latter finished very fast over tho last furlong, and beat King Balboa by a neck, Circulation a length and a-half away third, Overhaul, Tembroney, Seine Rose, and Beacon Light next. Mrs Gordon, wife of the president, handed over the handsome gold cup attached to tho stake, and Mr R. Green suitably acknowledged the president’s remarks in making the presentation. Investments, £3,2004 (£4,1274).

The withdrawal of Ranui from the Great Western Steeplechase left a field of only five, the smallest field since Peter Simple won in 1899, and Nylqtis was sent out a warm favourite, being nearly twice as well backed as Snowfall oi Greenstone, who were the best fancied of the others. The latter at once took charg- and led Snowfall and the favourite to the big post and rail iu front of the stand, where Nylotis tossed out Greentone continued on in the lead from Snowfall, with the other pair handy for the next two miles, then lie hit a fen« hard and was only three lengths to the good at the next fence, the post and rails leading back into the course proper. Snowfall, whose saddle had slipped back almost halfway to his loins, ran up to Greenstone after negotiating the sod wall, where The Babefell, and easily heat him home by five lengths. Windermere was twenty lengths away, third. Investments, £1,?07* (£2,732).

The withdrawals from the Visitors’ Hack Handicap were Arrowy and Craigmore and Lucky Light, on the good form she showed at the Invercargill meeting, was sent out better hacked than Battle Maid, with Attract also well fancied. Town Major was left from an otherwise good start, and Attract quickly went to the front, leadin'l - Battle Maid and -Full Fling. After rounding the far turn Attract was four ’ongths in front of Full Fling, Lucky Light, and Ohai, who were running

abreast, just in front of Battle Maid. Attract was five lengths to tho good of tho favourit at the homo turn, but stopped badly over the last half furlong, and Lucky Light won easily by three lengths from Battle Maid, who beat Attract by two lengths for second money. Town Major finished fast into fourth place after being badly left, and was followed by Ohai and Narrative. Investments, £2,446f (£2,819).

The scratching pen was used freely in tho Pourakino Handicap, Apache, Wingatui, Red Racer, Wayward, and Flying Mist being withdrawn, and Fairy Herald was sent out a few pounds better backed than Sparkling Eyes, with Camisader and Money Mine next fancied. After a couple of attempts to gel thorn away from a standing start, during which- Camisader lashed out and cut open one of Sparkling Eyes’ knees, a walking-in start was made, from which Money Mine and Fairy Herald made play. After going a couple of furlongs King Sol ran up to Money Mine and led him round the far turn, Camisader and the favourite together running next. At tho home turn Camisader joined the leaders, and Fairy Herald got a good run on the rails, but stumbled and lost his p° s i' lion. Camisader was challenged at the distance post by Solzia, but beat him hojuo by a length and a-half. Money Mine was a length off, third, a neck in front of Sparkling Eyes, find the favourite next. Investments, £2,9i/ (£3,924).
