SOUTH OTAGO NOTES
[From Our Correspondent.] TIALOf.UTHA, April 1. Howling.—On Wednesday a combined team from the Kuitangata and Stirling Ladies’ Clubs visited Balehitha, and played a match with Die local ladies. The weather was fine, and an interesting game ended in a win for the local ladies by 53 points to 34 points. The visitors were hospitably entertained, and had a very enjoyable afternoon. Personal.—-Mr 1). M'Tie, who has received an appointment as third assistant at Mornington School, was, with Mrs M‘Vie, entertained at afternoon tea by the staff of the local school, and was the recipient of a Sehanffer fountain pen, inscribed, while Mrs M‘Vie received a nice bedroom clock. Mr M‘Vic also received a Schaeffer pencil from his pupils in Standard VI. Mr M‘Vie has- been five and a-half years on the Haldntha staff, first as third assistant, and for the past two years as first ass istant. Mr .John H awke, M.A., of the Normal School, Dunedin, has been appointed bead master of the HalclutJia Public School, and Mr G. IT. Mitchell, head master at Warcpa. has been appointed first assistant. Hoth gentlemen fake up their new duties on May I. Messrs Caskic and W. I'!. Wilkinson. of Dunedin, are relieving here, and for April Mr T. Wilson will act as head master. Mrs J. H. Stevenson and Tier daughter. Margaret, of Haldntha, and .Mrs J. M'Gillvray and her daughter. JJnth, of Cartahopp, leave _by the Jtnahine on Thursday for a, trip Home, flic former visiting relatives in Scotland and the latter relatives in Fngland. They will be away for about eight months. The Holidays.—The weather on Good Friday was fine, but Saturday was showery. There were no attractions locally, but large numbers spent the holidays at Kaka Point, which had a large influx of visitors. Beaumont races attracted a fair following of the sports from this end. A number of district howlers are taking part in Urn tournaments at Dunedin, Oamani. and Waimate. while some members of the Kaitanga ta. Hitlc Club are taking pari in the shooting competitions in Dunedin. Wedding.--At the Haldntha Presbyterian Church on Tuesday, Mary, eldest daughter of Mr Geo. Harvey, of Stirling, was united in marriage to Mi dames Parlane Lowry, of Milton. Bcv. t\ . If. Hume, of Warcpa. was the officiating minister. The hrido looked charming in a frock of salmon pink crepe de chine, trimmed with gold lace, and wore the orthodox veil and orange blossom. _ She was attended by her sister, Annie, who wore a pretty frock of app'le crepe de chine, trimmed with silver lace, and J. Harvey carried out the duties of best man. The honeymoon is being spent in the north. General.—'Jhe boring plant at the site of the new Haldntha traffic bridge is now in operation, and the first bore ran into rock at a depth of eight feet. A Inrther boring of ]2ft disclosed that 11 1 0 reef was solid, and would provide a safe foundation. The plant has now been shifted into the water, and the result of the boring is being awaited with interest.--Mr' A. A. 'Campbell. Acclimatisation Society ranger, intends shortly to take op resilience nt. d!aldutlia, and with that object has purchased three acres of land at the south end ot the town.—Mr dames Hogg, a director ul the South Otago Freezing' Company, handed in his resignation at a meeting of directors held alder the big shareholders’ meeting on Wednesday, and this was accented.
