Fven yesterday, when most people were enjoying the holiday, some of the relief winkers were, busily engaged, part of the job being the distribution of hot. cross buns in the affected areas. Thjs morning the depot at the Queen’s .Buildings was again open, and supplies of clothing, food, and bedding were being distributed. The Rev. (i. 7C Moreton, one of those in .charge ol the depot, cannot speak too highly of the services of the ladies and others who have given so much of their time .ministering to the needs of the unfortunate sufferers. lie is delighted with the response made hy citizens and linns to the call for foodstuffs and other articles needed. The work of the committee, he pointed out, was to supply the necessities of life to the sufferers in the way of clothing, food, and bedding, and motors were still being despatched from the depot with supplies. Work would bo continued right through the holidays, but it was expected that the demand would have eased off sufficiently to allow of the depot being closed this week. THE V/ATER SUPPLY The Dunedin waiter supply, which was disorganised by the Jlood, is now practically back to normal as far as cjuantity is concerned, it being reported from (he city engineer's office this morning that every house is now receiving its usual share. However, the colloidal matter affecting floss Creek Reservoir continues to cause a cloudiness which can only be cleared away by tho gradual incoming of fresh water. It is h very difficult task in get this colloidal matter to settle, but the City Corporation’s engineering staff is assisting Nature all it can by putting into the reservoir substances calculated to help in the settling process. This morning Hie city engineer (Mr J. C. Alexander) said that tho clearing up of the Leith bed was going on steadily. One Harbour Board machine, two Drainage Board machines, in addition to men with drays, and horses, were carrying on with as much speed as possible. Moreover, it was expected that all the streets in the north central area, as well as the houses and sections, would he cleared by to-morrow, and the hulk of the detritus completely removed. There were 150 men engaged on the work yesterday. Although the.whole city was now- supplied with waiter the distribution of clean water by means of motor vehicles was being continued throughout the area fed by Ross Creek. Altogether seven vehicles were going the rounds, working from 7. -TO a.m. till 9or 10 p.m. each day, and they would carry cm until the ordinary supply had improved. The Harbour Board Engineer (Mr J. M'G. Wilkie) stated that forty men were engaged in the Leith canal between Forth street and Harbour terrace. The work was going on steadily.
