OTAGO RIFLE MEETING
SOME EXCELLENT PERFORMANCES THIS MORNING’S RESULTS The; outstanding feature of the Otago Rifle Championship Meeting, which was continued this morning, was the fine shooting of Rifleman Wilis (deputy-president of tho Invercargill Association) and Rifleman W. A. Graham (Dunedin) in the North Otago Match, *of 500yds, of ten shots. Both competitors reached the possible score of 50, and, continuing on, Wills finished up with 14 bulls to his credit, while Graham had 13. Despite the rather unpleasant weather conditions, the shooting was of an excellent standard, and competition was exceptionally keen in all the matches. Good shooting was the order in the 300 match, for which fine weather prevailed until halfway through, when the remainder of tho competitors in the finals had to shoot under showery conditions. Rifleman R. Piper (Christchurch), who has just returned from Sydney after representing New Zealand in the Australian Championships, figured prominently in all the matches, and was among the best in the aggregate, though he failed to show his best form. One of tho most meritorious performances of tho morning’s shoot was that of Colonel E, R. Smith (vice-pre-sident of the Otago Association and one of the oldest members present), who scored 40 with ten shots of the 500 mark in the North Otago Match. Colonel Smith won the Now Zealand Relt in 1894. Another well-known figure among rifle enthusiasts who was present was Lieutenant Montgomery. On Monday morning the teams will shoot for the Ladies’ Challenge Shield and the Ashburton Cup. Keen contests are expected in all competitions The following are the results: — OTAGO MATCH.
