DUNEDIN RETURNS Several decreases are noticeable in the Customs returns for March. There is a decrease of about £I,OOO in Customs duties and a little over .£I,OOO in beer duties, bub the, petrol tax shows a substantial increase over the figures for March of last year. For the year ended on Thursday a decrease of, roughly, £41,000 is shown in the Customs duties, but the figures for beer duty show an increase of about £2,000 over the previous twelve months. Petrol tax brought in £54,540 os Id. during the financial year just past, lint as this tax was not first levied until February, 1028, no figures are available for a comparison over twelve months The following table affords a comparison between the returns for Alarch of this year and last year;— March, 1928. Tho Customs duties collected at Christchurch during the financial year 1928-29 show a decrease, on those for the preceding year of £33,400, but for the Alarch quarter there is an increase for this year of £28,8000. Beer duty shows an increase for the financial year of £3,400. The tyre tax for the past year was £15,296 17s, compared with £6,814 last year.
