RIFLE SHOOTING
OTAGO ASSOCIATION’S MEETING SOME EXCELLENT SCORES Tlio weather was fine on Hie Pelichet Bay range yesterday for the opening of the Otago Rifle Association’s Easter meeting. The light was perfect, and what little wind there was proved to bo variable, and this, no doubt, accounted for none of the marksmen securing possibles. Nevertheless, sonic excellent scores were recorded. The entries totalled Bid, only one fewer than last year. Many of the competitors _ came from a distance. Timaru provided fifteen men, Ashburton eleven, Oamaru six, and Invercargill twelve, while one competitor came from Bluff. Fifteen teams liav<j been entered for the teams’ match. Before the shooting commenced Colonel E. R. Smith welcomed the competitors on behalf of the associati m’s committee. He particularly welcomed the young shots, and said it was vciy pleasing to sec an increase in their numbers. Ho referred to the various improvements made on the range since the last meeting, and especially commended the work of the committee, a number of whom had spent a considerable amount of time during the past week in making all the necessary arrangements to enable the meeting to be carried on pleasantly and successfully.
The committee arranged for a supply of cordite ammunition and also a supply of uitro-cellulo.se ammunition, as it was thought a number of competitors might express a wish to use the latter, but, as a matter of fact, very little was in demand. Several excellent scores were made in the four matches decided. in the Southland match Rifleman J. Tie (Invercargill) and Rifleman C. M'Keich (Kiwi) registered 47 cadi at lt)yds. in the Service Match Rifleman Mason (Christchurch) and Rifleman J. Gilmmir (Goodwood) put on (39 under service conditions—no sling to the rifle and open sights. This was considered an excellent performance. In the Canterbury Matcli Rifleman E. Porter (Ashburton) and Rifleman A. Lyali (Invercargill) scored one short of the possible with ten shots at 500yds. Lieutenant 11. S. .Montgomery was the range officer, and carried nut bis duties to the satisfaction of all concerned. The markers could not have boon improved upon. Rifleman Colin M'Keich acted as secretary, and under his supervision all the clerical work was carried out promptly and efficiently. The meeting will ho_ continued today, shooting commencing at S a.ni. The day’s competitions will consist of the Otago. North Otago, and the South Canterbury matches. On Monday morning the Ladies’ Challenge Shield and the Ashburton Cup will ho fired for.
