OTAGO AMATEUR CHAMPIONSHIP YESTERDAY’S PLAY At Balmacewcn .yesterday in fine weather seventy-six players entered lor the Otago amateur championship, including Dr Barnett (present champion), B. V. Wright (runner-up for the championship last year), C. B. Wight (St. Clair), W. Clayton (St. Clair), J. A. Mangan (Lninsden), ■S. C. Colbeck (Otago), and W. C. Wight _ (Otago). Dr Ross (a. past champion) is in Christchurch, competing in tiic Canterbury championships. The course was in excellent condition, though not so good as last year, alter the recent heavy rain. The greens were for the same reason somewhat hard to play. The fairways were in beautiful order. The contestants comprised representatives from the three local clubs, and there were visitors from Wellington to Invercargill. On the day’s play tlu Otago Club holds premier position, with nine qualified players, St. Clair four, Lnmsdcn one, and Roxburgh one. The arrangements for the tournament were in the hands of the capable secretary of the Otago Club (Mr G H. G. Smith).
