LAWN TENNIS
SOUTH ISLAND CHAMPIONSHIPS FIRST DAY’S PLAY Ideal weather conditions ruled yesterday for the commencement of the South Island lawn tennis championships which arc being held this year in Dunedin under the auspices of the Otago lawn Tennis Association. All the ladies’ matches were played on the Otago courts, and the-men’s matches v/ere played on the Anderson’s Hay and St. Kilda courts. The games were well managed, and good progress was made in all sections. W. A. Bray had a Hoar run through to the semi-final in the men’s singles championship, none of Ins opponents giving him much trouble. Owing to the absence of C. Augas, these matches did not go as far as they might have, but a number of matches in the third round were completed. Blade and M'Dongall, the Otago { pair, survived the first round of the men’s doubles championship, deleaving Johnston and M'Kinnon G-U, G-2. The Pcarco Brothers had a good win over hindsay and Gosling, the scores being 7-o. 6-3, but they had to play hard fo r it. In the second round the only match played, that between Dr Fockcn and Watson and Hughes and M‘Kay, provided a most interesting exhibition. Watson and Hughes played cleverly throughout, and were at times brilliant, but their opponents were more experienced, and their steadiness won the younger men down. It is a pity that tho draw for the ladies’ singles championship was not “ seeded,” as it meant that Miss J.lattisou. the Otago lady champion, was drawn to meet Miss M. Gibson, the South Island champion, and she was eliminated in the first round. Otherwise site would probably have gone well towards the semi-final. The following are tho results of yesterday’s play;— AIEN’S CHAMPIONSHIP SINGLES. Host of three acts; final best of five sets. Holder, C. E. Malfroy 1 Wellington). —First Round.— i E. G. Boddy beat J.
