FIXTURES. March 30.—Queenstown result a. April s.—Queen’s Drive Club races. O.R.A. REGATTA. The Otago Association s regatta, held last Saturday, was ipiito a success, and the committee’s action in changing the course from Fort Chalmers to Out ediu proved to be the right thing. At times it was a little rough, but enough to upset the programme. The course was a porlcctly straight one, with no advantages whatever. The only fault that could be louud was the lateness ol some crews in getting to the post. The first nice was a quarter of an hour laic lor a start, and by the time the last race started it was 0 o'clock, whereas tho programme should have concluded at o o’clock. In the junior fours iSurth End must have waited at the post lor a full twenty minutes for tho othei three crews. Fort Chajmcrs secured lour firsts, one ’dead heat, three seconds, and one third; Queen’s Drive, four _ firsts, second, and lour thirds; North F^ncl, two firsts, llireo seconds, one third; Otago, one first, one (.lead heat, three seconds, four thirds; Oamaru, one second and one third. The White Memorial Trophy goes to North End as winners ol the maiden fours, the Henley Cup to Queen's Drive ;is Avitmeix ni senior lour-*. .1 lio Joiin Mill Memorial Cup also goes to Queen s Drive lor the .same race. The prize money was distributed as 'follows: —Fort Chalmers, -Ll9 ; Diuc, ;C1) ; North End. .ItHI; Otago, .LIU; Oamaru, LI. Tho phenomenal iact about 1 ort Chalmers Chdi on Saturday was the surprising number of wins by “scratch" crews. The maiden pair (Erridge and MTiilyre, both how side men) were out lor tho first time in a
pail', ami won easily. The indisposition a I Miller upset llie calculation of I lit; other crews, which had lo draw on tneii No, '2 crows, thereby diminishing the fields" Hill Lst) with Ins «rew -was very snccesslnl in having three fii'ts ami a .second out of t'mir starts. N’tdson proved his worth by raking Aldi.n plan) and helping to win tin; juniui fours, The youths lv>nr, with Anoeison rowing No, 2, was unincky to lose by a canvas, ami Mill creel its first defeat 01 the season. Anderson, although in strange company, rowed a great race. Hill and Parsons had no trouble in annexing the youths’ pairs M Connell rowed with Hdl in tiie souths sculls for the 'irst time, both doing fine performance', and won the event, by about a length. Cranium! and Solomon, also logclher lor the lir-T. time, sculled a splendid race in the junior sculls, and. although several lengths behind at the end ol the whari, they made a areal, recovery, and deadheated with'(Hap;o for first, place. These two men were members ol the Otago interprnvineial eight. which won the championship at Lyttelton, vete unable to train lor sciilC. C. Nelson mid J. Mclntyre, although out ol practice, rowed well for second place in lire junior pairs. A. Craniond and J. Al‘intvre sculled a good second m the maiden double sculls. Anderson and Pol ter showed up well ui the youths sculls and pairs, but they found the water rather Irvine. Tim Drive youths' pair was very disappointing on the day. but it remains to be seen wiiat it can do at (v»ueenstown. _ In the maiden pairs the Drive represl’)!tntivt‘s. Jour l '' uiul Kuiorsoii, did not show to great advantage, but. it the No. .1 crow had started (MacDonald was workino', the result would (pule pos-dhly have been dillercnt. J lark and Pritchard, although they won Irani a serateh erew by only three-quarters o) a length, had a good deal in reserve in the senior pair-. Although a considerable distance behind the second erew the Drive youths did comparatively well to act a third place. _ Thorn and Teller had little difficulty in winiiiny; the junior pairs, and appeared to bo quite a good combination. The Drive maiden fours were very disappointing on Saturday. They have defeated every local maiden crew except the Oamaru. and yet cannot register a win. There must be something wrong—lack of training on someone’s part, or something else equally detrimental to a crew s chances. The MacDonald brothers should be heard of again as sculleis, their performance on Saturday being quite creditable. Hi the junior .sculls Drive sent out I. Porter and the youth X. AlaeDouald, who had just had a race. Matheson, who should have partnered Porter, was required for the senior lour', a race which was to he held almost at the .same Time a-* the junior sculls, surely an unfair decision. W lien an entry such as this is accepted, crows should bn given a reasonable opportunity to change from one boat to the other. On past performances. Matheson and Portin' should have the junior sculls with comparative ease. The dead heat would then have probably been for second place. Apart, however, from the unfortunate position which arose, this was easily the last, race ol the day. Clark's crew bad an ens.v win in the seniors, and there does not seem Lo he any erew about here which can approach them. Thorn had another easy win, this time with Treloar, in the maiden sends. These two will be _ hard to defeat next season as junior scullers. The senior sculls provided another exciting finish, the Otago men having the required weight and sweep to carry them over. Clark and Pritchard seemed to .have expended their energy in the earlier part of the rime, as the result, of a, poor start.
Owing to Jiean being in the Northend youths’ crew, Itn wa> unable to row in the previous event, senior pairs, in which North-end got a close second to Drive ,b'. Jiggers (stroke of the senior Jour) replaced Dean in the how scat, and the performance was good, espociall\' -when it is borne in mind that Munson, the stroke, was handicapped through Ids jersey catching in the slide, and causing him to lose a few strokes near the finish of the race. The biggest surprise of the day for NortJi-ond was in the youths’ fours, a crow wliicli had not previously rowed together, and, at the last moment, the bow (M'Millan) and No. 2 (Walker) were substituted by Clarke and itoilIs fortunate iu having two crews able to secure first and second places. The second crew seemed to show the better form, and if the course had been a little longer would, no doubt, have won. The No. 1 crew, however, has a good record in winning four races this season. The No, 2 crew rowed a greatrace considering that the boat used was a one of the heavy training boats. _This crew, which can row in a training . boat aud beat racing boats, will prob-
able come to the fore in maiden rowing next rear. The North-end senior tour inul not rowed together before, but, with a tow spins and the resulting combination, would have extended Drive to its utmost. Ot ago won the senior double sculls against Drive, the two crews keeping together for a quarter of a mile; then Drive began to draw away, getting a lead of a length or so. At halfway Otago came up again, and a ncek-and-neek rare ensued to the finish, which ended in favour of Otago by half a boat’s length. SHIELD AND CUP POINTS. Points for premiership shield and cups to date Premiership Shield: Port Chalmers ISO, Drive 129, North End 80, Otago .TO, Oamaru 32. Senior Cup; Drive 20, Otago 10. North End 9, Port Chalmers 2. Queenstown regatta to-day wiil ring down *the curtain for the season, which has been a very hard, hut successful one. Queen's Drive still has a chance of winning the premiership shield if its crews keep up their run of successes at Queenstown. Port Chalmers Club was to ho rcprl'sented at the Queenstown regatta by the following crews Youths’ and junior fours: IT. Hill (st.), TV. Parsons, D. .Miller, W M‘Coiine/1 (bow). Y’ouths’ sculls (No. 1): Tl. Hill (st.), D. Miller (bow). Youths’ sculls (No. 2) : TV. M‘Connell (st.), J. Potter (bow). Youths’ pairs: D, Miller (st.), TV. Parsons , (bow). Malden sculls: J. M’intyre (st.), J. Potter (how). Junior pairs and sculls and senior pairs; C. Noilson (st.), J. M'Tntyre (bow). There is every possibility that the association will tender a function to the victorious eight-oar crew after blaster. A series of club races for the Cameron Medals will probably be rowed off by members of the Queen’s Drive Club on Saturday, April d, when some good races should he seen.
