‘ART IN NEW ZEALAND’
)\ e have received a copy of the third issue of ‘Art In New Zealand.’ It is sincerely to be hoped that this quarterly magazine will receive adequate support. From every point of view it is an admirable production, and the third number is equal, in merit to its predecessors. The first two were devoted to the work of Christchurch and Wellington artists. This time the pictures of representative Auckland artists have been chosen for reproduction. Done in colour and half-tone, a variety ot subjects is presented. Most striking in its delicacy, and Whistler-like effect is ‘Nocturne,’ from a water colour by John Haley; while three other water colours—-‘ On the Coromandel Coast ’ (Arnold Goodwin), ‘Where Land and .Son in Peace Do Meet’ (Ella Spicer), and ‘Titirangi’ (A. J. Brown)—are also attractive. These are all worked in colour, as is also ‘ Joan,’ an arresting portrait in oils by Ida H. Carey. Thoro is a wealth of reproductions in black and white, a number of them possessing great charm because of their method of treatment, ' line draughtsmanship, and snreness of line. The examples in this publication suggest that the dominion is moving rapidly towards a definite place in the world of art. The literary side of the magazine is also of a, high standard, as can be understood when it is stated that tho contributors to this section include .Jessie Maekay, Eileen Duggan, John Cam Duncan, Arthur Hirst, F.R.S.A.,
iiiul C. A. Marris. In an article on ‘New Zealand and Australian Art’ William Moore, in a most interesting way, compares tlie trend of art in the Commonwealth and the dominion. The printing and general arrangement of the magazine, from the press of Messrs Harry H. Tombs, Wellington, are beyond reproach.
