FIGHTING BEGINS NANKING AND HANKOW FORGES ENGAGED Press Association—By Telegraph—Copyright, SHANGHAI, March 26. (Received March 27, at 10 a.m.) Hostilities have broken out in the middle of the Yangtse Valley, between Hankow and Nanking. The lorces of tho former are taking the offensive. The Hankow faction is receiving support from Canton. It is believed that the Nanking Government's future existence depends on the outcome of the present struggle. Twenty thousand Kwangsi troops, marching rapidly on Kiangsi to reinforce the Wuhan troops, launched an attack on the Government troops today. The Communists are reported to he arming and preparing to join in the anti-Nanking forces.—Australian Press Association. THE FAMINE FUND A POOR RESPONSE. Press Association —By Telegraph—Copyright WELLINGTON. March 27. Tho China famine fund is not meeting with much response. Only if 172 has been subscribed so far. At a meeting convened by the mayor a committee was appointed to collect subscriptions, and it was also decided to wait on tho Government. One enthusiastic speaker thought that tho Prime Minister should bo asked for £60,000, but this was at once strongly deprecated.
