HAWKE CUP DISPUTE [Per United Press Association.] CHRISTCHURCH, Aiarch 20. The failure of the Alanawatn Cricket Association to play its match with the Hawke’s Bay Association in the Hawke Cup competition was dismissed h.v tho New Zealand Cricket Council to-night. Before the meeting were files ot correspondence between the council and the Manawatu and Hawke’s Bay Associations. A long letter was received from Mr llcathcoto Williams, on behalf ol Hawke’s Bay. in which he stated that Afanawatu’s objection to playing on the date appointed by the council on the ground that Alanawatn was nimble to field a team could not he sustained, as Alanawatn was prepared to play Waiapu on the same dates. He suggested that the reason why Alanawatn preferred to play Waiapu was that it might boat Waiapu easily, while it feared being beaten by Hawke's Bay, which was sending a strong team. Do expressed disappointment that Die council had not forced Alanawatn to play the match on the dates fixed. Air Williams suggested tho fixing ol the Alnnawatei-Hawke’s Bay match for ‘Easter. Mr Donnelly’s reply on behalf of the Cricket Association was to Die effect that Air Williams tool, an unwarrantably harsh view of the facts. He had been personally assured by officers of the Alanawatn Association that they would have played if they could have got a team together. The council must accept these statements unless proved incorrect. The council passed the following resolution :— 11 That the Alanagoment Committee regrets tho misunderstanding that Ims arisen between Hawke’s Bay and Alanawatn, but in view of the explanation received from Alamiwatn, the committee has decided to take iio further action in the matter. Tho application by Hawke’s Bay that it he awarded the Hawke Cup by default cannot bo granted, and Alanawatu must play Nelson at Easter, as previously arranged.”
