MEN’S HOCKEY
MEETING OF ASSOCIATION i The annual meeting: of the Otago Men’s Hockey Association was held in the Y.M.C.A. last evening, when there was a large attendance of delegates, with Mr J. Hogg in the chair. In welcoming the new delegates to the meeting the Chairman expressed his gratification at the large number of players and ex-players present, which augured well for a. most successful season., In the course of his remarks he referred to the growth and progress achieved by the game of hockey in Otago. Probably few realised what a great part hockey played in the physical development of youth. Hockey was a well-established game in all parts of the British Empire, and an idea of its possibilities was fully exemplified when the Indian team visited these shores. A great deal of good work was being done in the primary and secondary schools to-day in the advancing of the game in Otago, hut still a great deal more conld he done in this direction. Mr Hogg also had great pleasure in congiatnlating the University Club on winning the senior cup. and also the Albany Old Boys’ Club on winning both of the junior nips. He also stressed the point that the association could not spend its money in. a, more beneficial wav tbfin sending teams to compote in provincial tourneys. Dunedin had never been favoured with a test match, but it was hoped that in the near future this desire would he fully realised. On the question of grounds the authorities had assured the association of the same allowance a: last year. In this direetion he had pl'asure in congratulating the Cifv Corporation in i making such splendid improvements to the Oval. He had been assured by Mr Tannoek that all the association's oTonmls on the Oval would he ready lor use this roar. These inmrovod prnumN | would certainly improve the standard of play. Arrangements were now in hand for' the visit of an Australian team, while a tour of Now Zealand had been rupiit imied by flic British anl noi il ics. Bark, who had been one of the most outstanding figures in the game in Otago. In seconding the adoption of the report. Air B. Ireland emphasised the necessity of encouraging the game in tli° primary schools. Afr H. F. Pavtnn aho made eulogistic reference to Ihe gratifying results attained during the pn-T year. r l here was one matter which he thought should claim the incoming committee’s attention. and that was the selecting and training of a colts’ learn, in order to reach a higher standard ot efficiency when a iuninr team was sent to contest provincial games.
