Beau Geslo will he ridden in Ihe Great Autumn Handicap by L. J. Ellis. Rotor, who in some quarters was looked upon as a light-weight possibility in the Great Autumn Handicap, broke down alter a training gallop at Riccartou on Saturday morning. Town Bank’s victory in the Southland Cup on Wednesday last adds another £260 to his winning total since he was sold at Trentham in January last tor 175g.5, and with £545 now the return the Archiestown gelding already stands out as a good speculation. The following is a statement of the respective amounts won bv the three-year-olds named in New Zealand this season :—Prodice £3,10(1, Red Heckle £2.700, Niglitmnrch £2,115, Concentrate £1,550. TJio Beaumont Eating Club's course has been put in splendid order for next Monday’s meeting, and. ns excellent acceptances have been received, the meeting promises to be a record one for the club. I have to acknowledge with thanks from the Christchurch Press Co.. Ltd., the pocket edition of the New Zealand Tnrl Register, covering both racing and trotting meetings from December 7, 1928, to March 18. 1929. This handy .little guide is very complete in the information required by all racing men, and has been published just at the time when it will be most useful to students of form. 1 am indebted to a Balclutha friend for a copy of the race card of the last meeting held by the Clntha Hack Racing Club on January 22, 1909. Of the officials at that meeting I notice only ilie names of Messrs Phil Client and W. Stewart amongst the officials of last Saturday’s fixture. A. E. Ellis who had only a few mounts over the sticks last season, has expressed his intention of again actively participating in hurdle and steeplechase events throughout the approaching season. Rapier met with slight injury in the Awapuni Gold Cup, hut is now quite right again. He worked soundly at Eicearton on Saturday. Mr C. F. Valiance. who was injured in a motor accident when on his way lo the Trentham races last week, also had the misfortune lo lose that good hut unlucky gelding Ivalos on the same day. Ivalos was playing about in the paddock, and was kicked by Pencils, breaking a leg. necessitating bis destruction. Mr Valiance, who was taken to the Mastorton Hospital, is now mak-ing-good progress towards recovery. Last year Greenstone icon each of the big steeplechases at Riverton, carrying 9.5 over three miles ami 10.7 over two miles and a-half, winning easily each day from Maungamoe. in this year's Great Western Steeplechase he has been awarded 10.9, hut as both Nylotis and The Babe heat him easily at. Invercargill last week and are only .meeting him on lOlb and 51b worse terms respectively he does not appear to have much chance of repeating last year’s double. Dominant (Saltasli —Wellea), wlrj cost CLoUUgns at auction Inst year— Austtalian record for a yearling—lias not yet raced, and it may lie some time belore he does, A couple of times lie has been ready to race, hut .something debarred him at, the hist moment. From Mol bourne comes word Chat Dominant's appearance m a race is still a long way off, as fast week ho was_ gelded. Nedda has left Melbourne for Sydney, where she will race before returning homo to New Zealand, Mrs A. M'Donald's stable at Awapnni contains a formidable- collection of good class hurdle performers likely to do well during the winter. TJie.se include ]!ed Fuschia, Locarno, and T.iicifc The last-named gives promise of making a name for himself over the battens, and many who saw him wm at Awapuni last week select him as a likely candidate in such races as the Great Northern and Grand National Hurdle races. E Reed was riding in line form at Ai'apiini, where lie steered live winners. As a result of these successes ho ik now third on the list of winning jockeys with a total of 38 wins. L. .). Elba (12) ami L. G. Morris Ml ) are at present at the top of the list, and others prominent are IT. Goldfinch (To) and A. E. Ellis (31). Lnless any ol the riders mentioned has an outstanding run of success in the next few months there is going to be a. verv close contest for the premiership, ami whoever secures the honour is not likely to have a very big margin. Magpie has such a commanding lead in the winning sires’ list in Australia at this stage that it seems safe to Jay a good shade of odds on his figuring fit the head of the list when the season closes iu July. So far Magpie’s descendants have captured £32.126 in prize money this season, so that the prospects seem bright for the figures being raised to £40,000 ere the season closes. The New South Wales brooder, Mr Percy Miller, made a fine ;peculation a few rears back when ho bought Ma gpie for 5,000g5. Last autumn the seventeen yearlings sired by Magpie

sent up lo auction from Mr Miller’s stud realised 14.925g5. Mr C. Boyle, of Wellington, recently effected the purchase iu Melbourne for 625 gs of the five-yenr-old gelding Conjuror, by St. Alwyne from Poniard, thus a. brother to the well-performed Poitrei. Ho has been a winner of hurdle race-, and is to remain iu Melbourne in T. ,7. Hayes’s stable to carry out engagements iu ilie important hurdle events to be decided at both Melbourne and Sydney during the winter season. At the conclusion of this programme Conjuror will come to New Zealand and race in Mr Boyle’s interests here. Mr Boyle has for many years past been a- libera) patron of jumping races in the dominion. Circulation ran an excellent race in the Southland Cup on Wednesday, only being beaten over the. last half-furlong by Town Bank, to whom she was conceding 4’,!h. in the Riverton Cup next Saturday she, meets Town Bink on CJlb hotter term°, and with a course more to her liking she is sure to be one of the hardest to heat. She won this race last year with 8.9, beating a good field, including Queen Balboa 9.3 and Overhaul 9.1), who finished second and third. Circulation won both the Southland Cup and tins rare fast autumn, proving the assertion that she always races best at this season of the year. On her Invercargill run she appears to have an excellent chance of repealing last year's performance next Saturday. The owner of any stallion in England whose progeny have brought him distinction can depend upon reaping a rich harvest in the shape of fees. The case ot Hurry On stands out prominently. .Murry Oil's fee is 4UUgs. and, even the sum paid for Hie horse’s services on the twenty-eight living ioals registered, the .sum earned iu lees lor a single season runs out to £1.1,76(1. When a yearling Hurry On was bought by Mr J. Buchanan (now Lord Woolavington) for s(Kigs. and lie retained an unbeaten certificate iu Ids racing career, the .Doncaster St. Leger ol 1916 being included in bis triumphs. Hurry On lias sired three Derby winners in the shape of Captain '(Tittle (1922), Coronach (1926), and Call Bov (1927). Prior to Limerick having his lir-d: race on the present Australian trip I*. D. Jones said that there t\as uo certainty that the gelding would see the A. J.C. Aloe ting right, through (says the 1 Press). He might miss the A.J.C. Pluto on the last day, and n so would be back in New Zealand early enough to tackle Aussie at the end of next mouth. It tliat idea were carried out ho might High return to Syducv iu time to go to Brisbane for the King's Cup and any w.l.a. race that might be on the programme. The Brisbane Meet-i uig is in August, ami “it would mean 1 coming over only three weeks earlierthan usual,’’ said Jones. Brisbnueites would be delighted if Limerick and' Amcnnis were among the horses raging : there in August. ° j A wide distribution of honours in j connection with the classic events of I the.
