MINISTERIAL. Tho Prime Minister (Sir Joseph Ward) will arrive from Invercargill tomorrow evening, and will leave lor Wellington on Thursday. While in Dunedin he will slay at the Grand Hotel.
Twenty years of sterling service as the member for Hurunui, crowned by Ministerial rank, had recognition last night at Amberley, where over 200 people from all parts of the electorate attended a banquet to the Hon. G. W. Forbes, Minister of Lands. Enthusiasm was the keynote of the gathering, which included four other members oi Cabinet—the Hons. Stallworthy, He la Perrellc, Atmore, and Vcitch —the Hon. D. Ruddo (a former Liberal Minister), Mr Hawke, M.P., the Hon. Mr Witty, M.L.C., Mr MacFarlane (Mr Forbes’s Reform opponent at the last election), and many prominent people from all parts of North Canterbury. The pipe band played Mr Forbes from home to the hall. The Minister was presented with a solid silver cigarette case, and Mrs Forbes with a bouquet, amid prolonged cheering.—Press Association. The Hon, W. 13. Taverner (Minister of Railways and Customs), who is engaged on a. tour of Central Otago, will return to Dunedin on Thursday.
Mr T. S. do Beer went by the 11.34 train this morning to start a journey to Java, alter which lie proceeds to London, expecting to bo back in Dunedin bv the end ol the year. Mr ‘George Andrews returned to-day to Timaru after visiting Dunedin. The Bcv. W. Trotter is on I)is way to Auckland, partly on P.S.S.A. business. ~, ... Dr Alan Tonncnt. now of Wellington, left for that city by the through express to-day. Mr J. Waters returned on Saturday from the North Island, where he attended the annual meeting of the New Zealand Pharmacy Board held at Napier. Miss 0. Kay travelled to-day to Christchurch to defend her title as lady golf champion of Canterbury. The Bcv. Bather C. Ardagh, of Queenstown, went to Christchurch todav hv the 11.34 express. Mr'George Balsiile, of Opoho, who died yesterday, will bo remembered as one. of the touchers at Union Street School during Mr (now Professor) White's term ns head master. Subsequently and for quite a while, Mr Bal'd Ho was in charge of the school at Saiidyinotint. As a younger man he sailed with. Captain Stewart in the schooner Dunedin, probably the best known ol the coastal trading vessels of her time. Mr Balsiile must have been one of the oldest members of the Church of Christ in this eit\q oven before the pastorate of Mr M. W . Green. The recent death of Mrs E. Godfrcd, an old identity, was referred to at last night’s meeting of the Port Chalmers Council. A resolution of sympathy with Mr Godfred was carried. A similar resolution was passed in respect to the death of Miss E. Simpson. Ilcforcn.cc was made to the death or Sir William Sim at a meeting of the committee of the Shipwreck Relief Society yesterday afternoon. In expressing ‘the deep regret of the society at Ins death, the chairman (Mr C. W. Chamberlain) stated that Sir William had always taken a. keen and kindly interest in the welfare of the city and the society, over which he had presided for many years. New guests at the Grand Hotel include Mr and Mrs T. TJ. Croatian (Sydney), Mr G. Nelson (Hawke’s Bay), Misses M. A. Jones and G. Bridge ( Wairarapa), Mr aiid Mrs J. A. I' indlay Miss Findlay, Messrs W. Du Plan Llo’vd, M. A. Lloyd, and E. L. Kaula (Wellington), Mrs Fitzgerald (Oam-' aru), Mr T. L. Bowkcr (Dunbaek). . Visitors to the Excelsior Hotel include Messrs C. H. Henderson, W. Hegele, and G. Yonell (Melbourne), Mr N. D. Munn (Auckland), Messrs E. E. Weston, J. H. M'Callum, and J. Barber (Christchurch), Mrs F. 0. Rowley, Miss M. Goodman (Invercargill). Recent arrivals at the City Hotel include Mr T. J. Richards (Napier), Mr M. Rees (Wellington), Miss M. Allan, Messrs W. Beniams and R. Nicholson (Christchurch).
