POPPY DAY
PREPARATIONS OF DUNEDIN R.S.A. Blood-red poppies, symbolical of the sacrifice of the youth of our country in the Great War, will be on sale in tho streets on Friday, April 19. The excollon'- use to which the Dunedin R.S.A., supported by the subsidies granted -by local bodies, has put the proceeds iii the past commended itself to largo numbers of citizens, and tho response made was gratifying. Again the funds will bo used to provide work for those ex-service men, who mainly through their war disabilities, have been unable to compete in the ordinary labour channels, and it is confidently expected that the over-generous public wul continue to support a worthy cause. The need is as great as ever it was. and the Dunedin Returned Soldiers Association is at present carefully organising tho campaign. Arrangements for street sales in Dunedin aro well in hand. A considerable number of helpers arc coming forward, ns tho result of the appeal made through tho Council of Christian Congregations. Suburban committees have been arranged in Roslyn, St. Clair, St. Kilda, Dalmore, Wakari, and Leith. Mrs C. H. Hayward is in charge of the organisation of tho north end of the city, and would appreciate assistance from ladies who are prepared to make a house-to-house sale of poppies. Mrs Foster, of Clarendon street, who is in charge of the arrangements for Dunedin West, would bo glad of similar assistance.
Advice has been received from Balclutha. Clinton, Lawrencej Miller’s Flat, Alexandra, Waikouaiti, Palmerston, and Port Chalmers indicating that prompt and hearty assistance will be accorded to tho appeal in those places. Circular letters have been sent round the various country districts to sheep farmers seeking their co-operation, and the answers in the way of straight-out donations to tho fund have been most encouraging. Assistance is wanted in Morningtou, Bclleknowes, and Tainui. Replies have yet to come from Cromwell, Clyde, Ranfurly, Owaka, Queenstown, and smaller districts, but it is confidently expected that all these places will rise to tho occasion.
