SHEEP STEALING
SOME HEAVY LOSSES THIEVES USE MOTOR WAGONS [Per United Press Association.J TIMARU, March 25. South Canterbury nmholdcrs complain bitterly of the prevalence of sheep ■stealing. l\lr S. P. Hope, one of the largest holders in the Mackenzie country” states that 3,500 sheep were taken from the Sherwood Downs district last year, in one case a flock of 800 ewes completely disappearing. Messrs Hope brothers are offering a reward of £IOO for the conviction of.jfche thief taking sheep from their stations. Farmers say that the thieves raid the flocks in remote paddocks, or take lots of twenty or thirty in covered-in motor wagons, and are even daring enough to cut sections out of the long lines being driven from the sales. Recent losses include 100 ewes from a paddock fronting the main road at Pleasant Point, 400 merino ewes from Whalesback station, 800 ewes from another Mackenzie run. Farmers urge that the Government should give more help in tracing thieves, and that the penalties for stealing be increased.
