BENEFIT CONCERT

There was a record attendance at the Empire Theatre last evening when the St. Kilda Band, assisted by local artists, gave a benefit concert in aid of local unemployment. The following attractive programme was presented Hymn, ‘ Nearer, My God, to Thee,’ St. Kilda Band; concert _ march, ‘Twentieth Century,’ St. Kilda Band: solo, ‘ In the Garden of My Heart, Miss Rita Holmes; cornet duct, ‘ Ida and Dot,’ Messrs G. Christie and J. Logan; test selection, ‘Lorenzo, St. Kilda Band; solo, 1 Melisande in the Wood,’ Mis, Mary Pratt; instrumental trio, ‘ Firing Dutchman,’ Misses K. Whelan (pianist), J. .Drnmm (violinist), and H. Drnmm (’cellist) : recitation, ‘ Captain Oates ’ (story of the Scott expedition). Miss Anita Winkel; solo, ‘Somewhere,’ Mr Les. Dailey; concert march, ‘ 8.8. and 8.E.,’ St. Kilda Band. , , ~ Mr J. W. Munro, M.P., on behalf of the Otago Labour Council unemployed, thanked the St. Kilda Band and the assisting artists tor the excellent programme presented. He also thanked Mr Pitt, manager of the Empire 'Theatre, for his kindness in lending the theatre free of charge, as well as Chas. Begg and Co. for supplying a piano for the occasions The collection, which was taken up by the Otago Labour Council, amounted to £SG. Over 1,000 programmes were sold at Id each.
