SOUTH OTAGO TROTTING CLUB IMPERIAL BINGEN WINS THE GUP [By St. Claih.] The Inaugural meeting of the recently registered South Otago Trotting Club was held on a track made on the show and sports grounds at Balclntha, in excellent weather and before a good attendance, orer £ll2 being taken at the gates. It was arigiuallv intended to hold the meeting on the course made about a year ago on the reserve next the river, but the big flood experienced last year damaged this so much that it was considered better to make a track on the outside of the show and sports grounds, which provided a circuit of about a chain Jess than' five furlongs. The recent wet Weather had made it wet in one or two places, hut the executive of the dub. by making extra drains and culverts, succeeded in getting rid of the water, and thanks to the frequent use of a heavy roller, provided a much better track than was expected. To get. as largo a circuit as possible some of the corners were a little sharp, and the straight was not nearly as long as it should have been, but these trifles played into the hands of the better riders and drivers. "With only one exception, the fields were good and the racing was quite interesting. The officials not only succeeded in running the meeting punctually, but also managed it well, and when a totalizator permit is available the ruling authorities need have no fear that the executive of this club will not be able to manage a race meeting well. During the afternoon several handsome trophies donated to the club were presented respective!v bv Messrs F. AVaite, M.P.,' D. T. Homing, M.L.0., and S. V. AVhito, mayor of Balclntha, each of whom wished the club luck in its attempt to secure a totalisntor permit, and congratulated the executive on the success of their first meeting. After the AVaiwera Handicap a complaint was made by P. Gallagher, driver of Silver Jack, for interference, hut the Judicial Committee, after hearing the evidence, decided to take no action. Orphan Annie led Etambe, Kenall, Chiming Lass, and Imperial Bingen over the first lap, then Orphan Annie broke, and Kenall led from Chiming Lass, Etambe, and Imperial Bingen. The latter ran to the front half a mile from home, and won easily by four lengths from Kenall, who was three lengths in front of Chiming Lass. Kinsnle was a poor fourth. Atr F. AVaite, M.P. for the district, presented J. AValsh with a gold-mounted whip donated by Alessrs Bilzou and Smart, and, in doing so, said it was fitting that after an interval of eighteen vears since hack racing was last held j.-i Balclntha that the first race should have ben won by a locally-bred and owned horse. Black Ard was withdrawn from the South Molyneux Handicap for unhoppled trotters. Ambition began the best of the limit horses and led Bob Elliott over the -first lap, the pahdrawing right away from Dunvegan and Fortress. With three furlongs to go Bob Elliott broke, hub quickly settling down again followed Ambition into the straight, but could not reach him by a length and a-qnarter. _ fortress was over 100 yards away third. Ju the South Otago Trotting Cup Invader was withdrawn. Real Home was the smartest of the limit horses to begin, and led Silver Jack, Jack Hobbs, and Imperial Bingen for half a. mile, then AVce Spark ran up to Silver Jack, and they followed Real Home into the second lap, Imperial Bingen and Duaclill also being close up. Real Homo led AVeo Spark, Imperial Bingen, Donelilf, and Drake into the last Jap, and with half a mile to go Drake ran round the field, and ho led Imperial Bingen and AVeo Spark along the back. Less than two Jurlongs from homo Imperial Bingen challenged Drake, and heading him before reaching the home turn won a good race, by' two lengths. Wee Spark was six lengths further back third. Doncliff was a good fourth, and Real Homo next.
Only Ambition (who was penalised 24yds for his previous win), Safonia, and Sasin went to the post for the Owaka Handicap, ami after the first furlong they ran in that order lor the remainder of the race, Ambition winning, easing up, by a dozen lengths, with Sasin a furlong and a-half off third.
In the AVaiwera Handicap Kenall. Pino Flower, Imperial Bingen, and Auditress were withdrawn. SilverJack led out from Real Home, this pair being well clear ot John Peel and Chiming Lass at the end ol the first two furlongs. Silver Jack broke before the end of halt a mile, and Real 'Homo took charge, but after going into the last hip broke, too, and Drake took charge from Homelight ami Real Horae three furlongs from home. Homelight challenged Drake in the next furlong, but broke at a wet place about a furlong and a-halt Irom the post. Real Home followed Drake into the straight, bub the latter boat him homo by four lengths. Homelight was ton lengths further back third. Silver Jack and Glen AVilkes were next. Vanquisher, Black Ard, and Hemlock were withdrawn from the Milton Handicap for uuhoppled trotters. Farmer Bill led’ out from Fortress, Dunvegan, and Bob Elliott, bub the former broke at the end ol two furlongs, and Bob Elliott Jed Dunvegan, Fortress, and Bob AVilkes for the next mile and a-half. Then Bob AVilkes ran into second place, but could not catch Bob Elliott, who won, casing up, by ten lengths from Boh AA'ilkes. Fortress was fifteen lengths away third, just iu front of Dunvegan. The big field of twenty-two in the Clutlia A’alley Handicap was reduced by the withdrawal of Jack Hobbs, Massey Boy, Glen Albert, Ambition, Kinsale, Real Home, Myrtle AA'ilkes. and Drake. Orphan Annie was the only one of the limit horses to go away smartly, and she led John Reel, Kenall, Glen AA'ilkes (who went away very smartly), Etambe, and Adamant over tiie first half-mile. Then Glcu AVilkes ran into second place, and two furlongs from homo headed Orphan Annie. Glen AA'ilkes led into the straight from Orphan Annie and Kenall, and stayed on to win by tivo lengths from Kenall, who beat Orphan Annie by a length and a-half. Adamant was a poor fourth, and Donelilf next. THAMES TROTS CUP TO ROGKBURH The Thames Trotting Club's Meeting was held in fine weather. The course was fast, arid there was a good attendance. The totalisator handled £16,6021, against £17,714 last year—a decrease" of £l,lll}. The Minister of Public AVorks (the Hon. E. A. Despite the fear that the colossal field would spoil the world’s greatest steeplechase, the Grand National was a successful race. It is notable that the long-priced winners of both the Lincoln Steeplechase and the Grand National Steeplechase belonged to women. Airs Gemmell, the owner of Gregalacb, won £13,000. About a dozen horses fell at the open ditch in front of the third fence, twenty-nino negotiated the canal fence, and two fell at the brook. The ‘Morning Post’ learns that, despite the unwieldy field the conditions of the race will not be altered. The contrary view is that of Mr Trevor AVignall, who, in the ‘ Daily Express/ says that owners and winners are unanimous in declaring that the Grand National is developing into a farce, and is no longer a race. Unless something is speedily done the National is a doomed race. , Nowadays it is not even a reasonable gamble, and the attendance has’ grown smaller every rear.—Australian Press Association.
