AKHML MEETING OTAGO BRANCH The annual meeting of the Otago brunch of the New Zealand Educational institute was continued this morning, Mr W. F. Abel (president) in the chair. ELECTION OF OFFICERS. Mr A. J. Woods, M.A., was elected president, and Mr L. E. do Berry, M.A., was elected vice-president. Mr J. B- Hawke. M.A., was reelected honorary secretary and treasurer, and Mr I). Forsyth was reelected auditor. REMITS. Remits for submission to Hie annual meeting of the New Zealand Educational Institute were considered. “ That we strongly urge the department to subsidise all voluntary contributions and donations for the encouragement of sport in our schools.” was moved by Mr A. Thomson.—Mr do Berry suggested that the request for subsidies should be limited to sports materials. —Other speakers spoko strongly against the proposal, which it was contended would destroy the initiative in pupils and in parents and place an uniair burden on the general taxpayer. —The remit was lest by a largo majority. “That as the work of special school teachers is of such an ardous nature, better conditions of side leave should prevail,” was discussed at some length and an amendment; “ That an attempt be made to secure better conditions of sick leave for all teachers,” was canned.
