BIG BROTHER BILL AND THE BAIRNS
A WEEKLY TALK Hello, everybody! The winner of the “ ako ” competition was Elbe Moodic, Glasgow street, Mosgiel. Tiie correct answers were:— Cake, snake, stake, take, slake, bake, hake, jake, lake, rake, sake, wake, quake, shake. . Everybody will have been tremendously excited this week by the dreadful flood, and lots of people will have suffered anxiety and Joss. Brother Bill knows a good number of the family who are poorer by the loss of hardearned household goods and chattels, and whose homes have been spoiled by mud and water. It was a terrible experience, very terrible indeed lor people who will have to work hard lor years to buy again the things that have been destroyed. To all members of the family who are in this position Brother Bill extends his very sincere sympathy. He would certainly make his sympathy of the most practical kind if he was a rich man. However, there were some bright spots in the business. For instance, on the night when the rain was falling in torrents, and flood water was swirling round the railway station, Brother Bill saw some Boy Scouts on duty, doing their best to help worried pcqde. And they were helping in other parts of the city. too. He Is glad to relate also the help, given by some big boys in another street where people bad to vacate their houses. They were going from house to house assisting anxious people to get their goods out of the danger of rising flood waters. Ono bright spot in all the dreadful a hair is that no one was drowned. This is a .mercy for -which wo all give thanks. It is a shining tribute to our common human nature that, when people are in trouble, there are folk ready and willing to help. There wail Jiig band of people who -worked all Wednesday night in the endeavour to help folk -who bad been naught by the rising waters. Bad enough though the business ■ was, these things do make it a bit lighter, Wherever yon can. and in whatever way yon can, help folk on whom tho burden of the Hood has fallen. Your always affectionate. BIG BROTHER BILL.
