NOTES ON THE EVENTS
[By St. Clair.] The Winton Trotting meeting was unfortunate in striking a wet day for its annual meeting, but still more unfortunate in having tin first four dividends of the day divider amongst backers of outsiders, wide locked up the two first pools amongst a few. -The attendance was good am the racing interesting. The. course was in splendid order at iire commenceincn but got slower as the day advanced. The totalisator investments, £12,906, showed a decease of £1,466 as compared with the amount handled last year. Princess Pointer, Nona Bingen, Marvin Dillon, and Weary Dillon were withdrawn from the Commissioners’ Handicap, for which the locally trained Country King, on his Gore form, was made a few pounds’ better favourite than Wild Voyage, this pair carrying more than' half lit pool. Wild Bingn was the best backed of the others. Wild Voyage began badly, and the favourite ied out from Sunchild, and led Sunchild, Sun tiro, Wave Soon, Lily Harold, and Wild Bingen at the end of half a mile. Going into the back stretch Sunchild headed the favourite, who put in a skip, and Wave Soon was close up, third. At the far turn Sunchild was almost in front of Country King, who again skipped, but he was, in between Sunchild and Wave Soon, the three being on ecpml terms as they turned for home, just in front of Lily Harold. At the distance post Wave Soon dropped out and Sunchild headed the favourdc, but with a well-timed run Lily Harold just got up in time to beat Sunchild by a head and return her supporters a dividend of over half a century. The favourite was four lengths away, third, Wave Soon and Wild Bingen next, Investments, £1,J76 (last year, £1,292). * * * *
Only Pattie Bingen was withdrawn from the Sou Hi Hilleml Handicap, for nnhoppled trotters, and in an even betting race Bob Wilkes was made a better favourite than Victor Bingen, Meree liingen, and Royal Stan, who_ were evenly fancied. Saxon and Snider at once drew right away from Hie others, and at the end of half a mile were fcOyds clear of Helen M'Gregor, Morce Bingen, and Blue Lady. Going into the back stretch Saxon broke, and Snider went on from Victor Bingen and Saxon. Snider was four lengths to Hie good at the home turn and stayed on to beat Victor Bingen by six lengths. Jade was live lengths ■ further back, third, and followed by Alpha Wilkes, Blue Ladv. and Saxon. Investments; £1,130 (£1,297). * * * »
The withdrawals from the Win Lon Trotting Club Handicap were John Dee, Limosa, Stockade Junior, Auto, Simshowor. Streak, Warepa, and Hylas, and the Gore-trained Nelson. M'Ehvyn was made a little better favourite than Logan Hanlon, with Denver’s Doll, Desert Star, and Revolt each well backed. Marinca stood at' the start, and Hushabye and Slump led out from Logan Hanlon, Nelson M'Ehvyn, and Denver’s Doll. Slump skipped at the end-of three furlongs, and Hushabye led for the remainder of the first mile from Logan Hanlon, Nelson M'Ehvyn, those three being in dose order passing the stand, and Hector’s Own, Denver’s Doll, and Desert Star were next. Going out of the straight, the latter got through on the rails, and at the half-mile was lying fourth to Logan Hanlon and Nelson _ MJElwyn, who were together and just in front of Hushabye. After rounding the far turn Desert Star ran up - to the leaders, and let Logan Hanlon, Hushabye, and Nelson M'Ehvyn into the straight. Desert Star ran home a good winner by three lengths from Logan Hanlon, who beat Hushabye by a length. Slump was fourth, Liberal and Denver’s Doll next. The handsome trophy attached to the stake was presented by Hon. P. do La Perrolle, Minister of Internal Affairs. Investments, £1,903 (£2,1(19).
* * * * In Uie Stewards’ Handicap, Southern Light, Lady Zita, Lou Thorpe, Nalbar, and Sunbell were withdrawn, and the Ashburton-trained Limosa was sent out favourite, nearly twice as well backed as Erin’s Chance, with Playwave, Needles, and Shady Spot nearly as well landed. Playwave and the favourite wore both slow to go away, and after going a couple of furlongs Haera-ra was showing the way to Baker Boy, the others closely bunched. At the end of half a mile Coy Bells joined Erin’s Chance and Baker Boy, and they led Sunshade into the last lap, the favourite being well back. The' latter improved her position going along the back, and at the far turn was running third to Sunshade and Bayer Boy. Bounding the top, fahnosa took charge from Sunshade and Playwave, the former having a slight advantage at the home turn, but was headed again by Sunshade at the distance. In a fine finish Limosa got up again, and won by a short neckj Playwave being four lengths off third, and followed by ShadySpot, Erin’s Chance, and Baker Boy. Investments, 1,7945- (£1,4011). * * * *
In the President’s Handicap, for unhoppled trotters, Corhbino and Ruby Bingen were scratched, and the betting was contined to Sunspeck and _ the Pleasant Point-owned Peter Lin, Victor Bingen and Jade being the best fancied of the others. Jade and Bob Wilkes lost their chances at the start, and Pattio Bingen went out the best of the limit horses. After going a couple of furlongs, Pattio Bingen, closely followed by Sunspcob and Peter Lin, and these three drew right away from the others. Pattio Bingen broke at the end of a mile, but settled down quickly, and led Sunspeck and Peter Lin into the back stretch. The leader went to another break at the half-mile post, where Peter Lin went to the front, and was followed by Sunspeck and Jock Bingen into the straight. Peter Lin won easing up by six lengths from Sunspeck, with Jock Bingen nest, five lengths off. Pattio Bingen, Peter Boy, and Gardenella were next. Investments, £1,654 (£1,612). * * » » ‘
The held for the Speedwell Handicap was reduced’ to a dozen by the scratching of Lou Thorpe, Glen Wilkes, Stockade Junior, Denver's Doll, Nelson M'Elwyn, Sunshbwer, and Warepa, and Rita MTvinney was sent out better backed than Logan Hanlon, Pleasant Wave and Needles- being the best fancied of the others. Needles led out the best of the limit; horses, and showed 'the way to Imperial Thorpe, Rita M'Kinney, and Logan Hanlon, these four drawing w'ell clear after passing the stand. Needles skipped going along the back, and Imperial Thorpe led Rita MTvinnev and Logan Hanlon to the fur turn. Crossing the top Rita M'Kinney showed in front and was half a length to the good of Logan .Hanlon •
and Imperial Thorpe at tho homo turn. In the run home she just lasted long enough to beat Logan Hanlon by a short neck, with Imperial Thorpe three lengths away third. Needles and Streak were next. Investments £1,602 (£1)940).
Wild Bingen, Nona Dillon, Lily Harold, Sunfire, Claverley, and Anto were withdrawn from tho Members’ Memorial Handicap, and the bracketed pair, Eiffel Tower and Sunchild, was made a slightly better favourite than Meteor or Country King, with Chimcaway the next, fancied. Red Chiraeaway, and Jolly Maid refused to leave their marks, and Chiming- King and Meteor led Sunchild to tho straight, where the latter broke badly at the crossing. Chiming King and Meteor led into tho back from Marvin Dillon and Winnie Wilkes. Marvin Dillon ran up to Meteor at the far turn, then broke, and Meteor led Willie Wilkes round the top. but Wdlio Wilkcs beat him to the home turn, and in the run home prevailed by a length ; Marvin Dillon a length and a-quarter away third, and kiffel '.lower and I 1 airwave next. Invcsfnients, £1,4911 (£1,812).
Glen Wilkes, John Dec, Liberal, Wilma Dillon, and Marinca being withdrawn from flic Farewell Handicap left a hold of eight, and Hie bracketed pair, Lou Thorpe , and Dawson Bingen was sent out much better backed than Honest Ne,d or Imperial Thorpe, who were tho best fancied of the others. Tho latter lost his chance at the start, and the pair led Honest Ned for over half a mile, the three being a dozen lengths dear. At the far turn. Dawson Bingen dropped out and before reaching tho straight Honest Ned was in charge, and he ran home an easy winner by eight lengths from ], ou Thorpe, with'Warepa four lengths further back third. Baby Joan and Dawson Bingen were next. Investments, £1,858 (£2,429.1).
