TURF NOTES

[By Sr. Clair.] It is understood that the Lawrence and Beaumont Clubs are endeavouring to arrange for the services of one bandicapper lor the two meetings, one of the conditions being that whoever is appointed must attend the meetings ol both clubs. For some years past now Mr J. E. Henrys has framed the handicaps for these two clubs. The track at Wingatui was too hard for Carnithia, and when produced ou Thursday he was plainly showing the effects of the race on the previous day, and he never threatened danger at any part of the journey. Tembroney knocked himself so badly in his race on the first day that his trainer was unable to start him on the second day. The, Wairio Jockey Club, which holds its annual race meeting on January Id, has received good nominations for its fixture, which is one of the best picnic gatherings in this island. After the good form he showed at the Cromwell Meeting three weeks ago J’otorex ran badly in each of his smarts at Wingatui. His form last week was not light, and properly placed he will win again before long. Calibration, who is one of file oldest, if not the oldest, horse racing in the south, was in good form at the Cattle Flat Meeting last week, and won a mile and a-half hurdle race, and later on in the afternoon ran second in a mile on Ihe flat. Kilmoyler's trainer put up 7i Ilj overweight to secure Emerson’.s services for his horse in the Allaiilou Handicap, but it was good judgment in doing so, for Emerson won him the race with a splendidly timed inn. F. Shaw had only a small team engaged at the meeting, and Kilinoyler gave him his only win. Apache ran the two best races he has run for sometime at the Wingatui Meeting, and was unlucky in not .winning two races at the meeting. He was the belter ridden of the pair, and in Timr, sday’s race this just landed him the slake. Cay Sonnet did not run to within half a stone of the lorm she showed at the Oamani .Meeting, and her Wingatui form can he discarded in summing up her chances in the. Invercargill Cup, in which, witli S.o, .she lias been given a good Enhance. » The ancient Cupidon was produced at the Cattle Flat Hack Racing Club's Meeting last week and won a double in good style. He is now owned and trained by the veteran Gilbert M'Lean, and Ids many friends are glad to sec him haring a lorn of luck with the ex-Australian Derby winner. Lady MTvenna, by Goklspear from Lady Victoria, could easily lay claim to he one ol the best bred horses racing at Mingatui. She got away badly in the Fernhill Handicap, losing several lengths, hut she was travelling lastin’ than anything else in the race at, the finish She looks like a certain winner- at the A ibceui. Meeting, .'which commences next Saturday. Jovial was again rushed away to the front in Thursday’s hurdle race, and again lie compounded a long way from luiinc. At the pace he is required to (ravel at over hurdles lie appears to lie unable to stay, and evidently is much heller' suited over steeplechase toon try. When Frond Knight dropped hack so suddenly in his race on Wednesday it was thought that lie had broken clown, hut lie returned to the enclosure apparently all right. Later in the afternoon his trainer found that he had knocked himself so severely that lie was not able to start him on the .second day. Dulcii Money made good amends in Hie Juvenile Handicap on Thursday for her defeat in the Dunedin Handicap file previous day when she appeared to get into trouble more, than once. Mr Gould was present both days to see his filly run. Mr J. M- Samson's run of had luck at the meeting received a check when Singer narrowly beat a good first favourite in Killorna in the Taihoa Handicap. and Die win was a popular one. Singer is by Songbird, who thus sired two winners at the melting. Meadow Lark being also by the Wyndhani-owned stallion. 'Lardy won the mile and a-qnarter hack race on Thursday very convincingly over the last furlong,' and looks like developing into a stayer. She ‘is a good-looking mare, and, like a lot of other horses by Archery, improves with age. Both Page Boy and Pilaster, whom Tardy heat over Lite last halffurlong, are also trained by Gicsoler, who thus had the honour of training the three placed horses. Meadow Lark showed what a nippy little horse he is by the way he shook Booster off over the last furlong of the Grand Stand Handicap, which,, by' the way, was run in train 13 3-ssec, equalling the record put up by Wild Hind in 1924. Meadow Lark looks like taking a part amongst the best sprinters in the Soulli this season. Royal Saxon gave nothing a rest during the running of the St._ Andrew’s Handicap on Thursday, and just stayed on long enough to head Battle Colours, who finished very fasl, and on this run should hold Royal Saxon easily in the Invercargill Cup. in which handicap ’Battle Colours will meet Royal Saxon ( . on 211) bettor terms than in the St. Andrew’s Handicap. The Farewell Handicap was one of the worst field that lias ever started at Wingatui. and. the withdrawals of Bailie Colours, Taboo, Wingatui, and Kilinoyler made the race a gift to King Balboa. Though _ there was only half a neck between King Balboa and Caniisader at the finish, flic former had a good .deal in hand, and considering that onlv these two were hacked supporters of Vhe favourite received quite a false price.
