SEAFARING FAMILY OF EIGHT
Aii interesting letter from Captain Richard Owen, a retired master mariner, of Amlwch, Anglesey, has been received, giving some account of eight men in his family—himself, his two brothers, his three sons, and two nephews—who have all taken masters’ certificates and have sailed on Liverpool liners. Captain Richard Owen himself was for several years in command oi vessels of the Heaver Line, of the P.S.N.C.’s West India services, of the Redouin Line, and of Frank C. Strick and Company. His son Thomas took his cn'ef engineer’s certificate 25 years ago, when lie was only twentythree years old, and sailed lor thirteen years as chief engineer on Johnson and Furness, Withy liners. His other son, who also holds a chief’s certificate, sails on the Orduna. Of his brothers, Captain Owen writes that Captain Thomas Owen, who has retired and lives in Carnarvon, sailed in the Anchor Line, and Captai.n William was decorated by the King of July in connection with the Messina, earthquake. His two nephews now sail as second officers in Lamport and Holt boats. This seems to he rather a good record for one family.
