KARITANE REGATTA
SUCCESSFUL FUNCTION HEAVY WIND SPOILS EVENTS Despite iiie [act that a strong .northeast wind made conditions at Kuritaiic rather unpleasant, many people Ironi within the radius of Dunedin to Oaniarn travelled to that popular seaside resort yesterday on the occasion of the holding of the annual regatta. The wind was blowing almost directly across the river, and when intending swimmers laid heard the opinions of the aqua-planers on the coldness of the water few cared to enter the water. Mr J. 11. Fairbairn was the organiser of the regatta, and lie was ably assisted by Messrs J. Y. Love, S. Lamb in his Canterbury ’champion boat High dinks. Mr Lamb manoeuvred bis boat most .skilfully, and gained the admiration of all present. His speed in the championship was about thirty-six miles per boar. A. Knights was the only contestant in the aqua-planing event to rcaefi his feet on the board. Within ssce ol starting lie was on bis lect, and, despite the twists and turns made by Mr Drummond in his -speed boat, Miss Bruce, Knights kept his feet for 3mm lOsec till home was reached. Good business was done at flic carnival end of the beach, and the organisers express themselves as being quite satisfied; but had the weather been better the takings would have been much greater.
