JOTTINGS
Tlit' Win ton Trotting Club’s annual meeting will bo bold to-morrow. Tim Waikouaili and Wyndham facing Clubs will hold their annual meetings on Tuesday. ■ _ The Southland Racing Clubs Summer Meeting will be held on Wednesday and Thursday of next week. Vaward did not show up in the Otago Handicap as well as ho did in his races at Oamarn. Sarniii was the first horse beaten in tiie Otago Handicap, and looks like being an overrated lilly. Lucy Locket did not show up as well as usual in the Otago Handicap, and it is possible this good inaro is feeling the effects of all the racing she ■is getting. Owners are reminded that nominations for the Wairio Meeting close tins evening, and acceptances for the \ lucent Meeting next Thursday. Valdamo can now surely be counted out as a back number. In the Otokia Handicap ho was only, half-way down the straight when the winners passed the post. Cunease was beaten very early in the Summer Hurdles, and the going was all against bis chances. He looked on the big side to see out a solid!)’ run race. Last summer meeting returned a profit of several hundred pounds to the Dunedin Jockey Club, but this week’s meeting will unfortunately result in a loss. It is reported that both Rutile Colours and ijiicy Locket will be starters in the haikouaiti blip next Tuesday. Tlie wind and sun alter the rain wind) fell on Clinstmas Day Jell tiie track at Wiugatui m wonderfully good order, and on 1 hursday it was very last. When Tartly, i'agc Roy, and Rliaster filled the places in the Fcrnhill Handicap yesterday, the Wingatiu trainer repeated the record be established at Gore a few seasons back when three horses lie trained lor Mr A. fee Canijbridge also linished hrst, second, and third in a race Several mistakes in the race cards ol Lins week’s meeting, including tile wrong spelling of owners and trainers' names, omissions in the description ol horses, and name ol a race wrong should nut be seen, in the cards issued by a metropolitan club. The success scored by Mr J. M. bamsun with Singer was quite a popular one, the public realising that lie always ran Ins horses to win and it was probably the last time they would see Lids owner’s colours unfurled at \\ mgatui for a long lime. Tembronev was 0110 ol the surprise packets at Wingutui on Wednesday, as he has done very little last work, and was much bigger in condition than is usually considered , right lor racing. He stack to his work well over the last furlong. Gay Sonnet did nut have the best ol runs in the early part of tho Federal Handicap, and the solid pace set by Rin Tin Tin and Circulation over the last two furlongs made it impossible for her to get up - nearer than sixth at tho finish. Frond Knight had every chance to win the Burnside Handicap, but appeared to toss in the job be bad in band over a furlong from the finish. Racing for tho home turn he looked to bold a strong winning chance, but once in the straight lie petered out badly. Tunainue looked a very much better conditioned horse than when he raced at Timaru last month, but was a trillo scratchy in his preliminary. Ho looked one of the best conditioned horses racing at the meeting. Camisader ran his best race for some time when be finished a bead behind Apache in the Otokia Handicap on Wednesday evening. Ho always had to catch Apache, and the latter just stayed out tho mile. Had the race been over another furlong it looked as if Camisader would have won. Waving Corn ran a very solid race in the Burnside Handicap, and though out with the leaders early she bung on to Meadow Lark over tho last furlong very gamely. It was a much improved performance compared with her winning effort at Oamaru ten days earlier. Filosol scored a popular win for Mr W. Quirk when lie came from tho back and won the Trial Stakes. The racing lie bad at Oamaru has evidently done this three-year-old good, for be finished on much better than in the Novice Stakes on tho second day of tho Oamaru Meeting, when Waving Corn beat him. Rin Tin Tin was not handicapped for the Grand Stand Handicap on tho second day, his owner having .scratched him alter winning on Wednesday. Ho intends spelling this member of his team, and as bo has been in work since the beginning of the season a short let up will do him goo’d. Mr J. M. Samson started eleven horses on Wednesday, and bad one or two representatives in all but the last race on the programme. He raced

without any luck, his stake winnings consisting of two thirds, one gained by Curinthia and the other by Singer. Those members of the Committee of the Dunedin Jockey Club who _ advocated charging ladies lor admission to Wingatui racecourse were well pleased with the result on the opening day of the Summer Meeting, as over 500 ladies’ tickets were sold, it certainly looks as if at least £OOO a year is to be added to the gate receipts. Salmo Salar, who had been workin" well prior to tbo meeting with Pink Note, nearly affected a surprise in the Trial Stakes, in which he started the rank outsider of the held. He was well buck iu tins curly stupes ot tlio race, but finished very strongly down the straight. He is engaged in the Visitors’ Hack Handicap at Wyndhain on New Year’s Day. When Kangatahi i’olj in tbo buneinei* Hurdles on Wednesday he stood off too lar Horn tbo hurdle and struck it as he was landing. Had tbo hurdles been lighter ones lie might, have scrambled through, but t\ingatni hurdles arc nut meant to be knocked down when- they are put up.. No doubt the Oamaru hurdles, of which llangatahi bit several, helped to make nim careless in bis jumping. Royal Saxon did not receive much help trom bis apprentice jockey in the Otago Handicap, as be was ridden into the ground. One can understand putting up apprentices where an allowance can he claimed, but in races where no allowance is permitted, and good, experienced horsemen arc available, as was the case on Wednesday, it is very difficult to understand an owner not securing the best horseman. One of the most popular wins at Wingatui on Wednesday was that scored by Arrowy in the Salisbury Handicap, and bis owner, P. T. Hogan, came in for quite a reception as the horse returned to the birdcage, ft was all the more pleasing to see tins horse win with “ W’atty ” Hogan in the saddle, for bis riding has been subjected to a good deal of criticism lately. In the race under notice he showed nine!) improved form, getting bis mount out well from the barrier, and hold him together well at the finish. Bink Note looked very well when be stripped for the Otago Handicap on Wednesday, and lie fully warranted the confidence reposed in bis chance by the public. He has seldom failed to run a good race at Wingatui, and in this race lie was standing up to the leaders several lengths at the homo turn, but when Rrodie called on him there was never any doubt about which horse would win. "Courses for horses” is an old saying, and it appears to apply well to Bink Note, for not only did bo win this same race last season, but has now won in each of bis last four starts at Wingatui The two-year-olds seen out at Wingatui mi Wednesday were quite a good lot, and it was a pity that tire chances of most of them were spoiled by the very bad start. The Graphic, who has improved a lot since she raced here in the spring, was given a groat chance when she got out of the barrier a couple of lengths to the good, but she stopped badly over the last bnll-fnr-Inng. and Ncdda, who is a very game youngster, as well as speedy, bad no tfoubio in gathering The Graphic up at the finish. Ncdda. who is held on lease by Mr B. S. Irwin, has never finished out of a place, and must he regarded as quite one oi the best of her ago in training in the South Island. '
