REGATTA SENSATION
STRANGE MOTOR BOAT INCIDENT NARROW ESCAPE [Per United Press Association.] WHANGARE.I, December 28. At the Russell regatta yesterday, one of the must astounding happenings in motor boat racing in the dominion tool; place. The Humbug, which was travelling at about twentyfive knots an hour, took a hairpin bend so sharply that the driver somersaulted clear of the controls into tho water. He had no chance to shut off tho power, and his red and white craft careered around him in erratic circles with' the tour cylinder engine doing its best. One vicious circling went within two feet of the swimming man. Mr W. Skinner (tho commodore of the Whangarci Cruising Chib) put olf in a dinghy with the object ol' rescuing the capsized competitor, hut fata willed otherwise, for seemingly the engine of the Humbug straightened itself, and tho boat sped away with its how well out of the water. It swept straight at Mr Skinner’s dinghy, striking it full abeam, and capsizing and leaping over it. Luckily the steel brim on the bottom did not strike Mr Skinner, who escaped with cuts behind his ears and on his legs
