TEARS TO-DAY WOMAN BOOKMAKER MAKES SCENE (Special to the ‘ Sxia.’l AUCKLAND, December 28. “I’ll poison myself; PU do myself in,” shrieked a woman at the Police Court this morning, when she was fined £lO for laying “tote” odds at the trots yesterday. Defendant, Julia Elleii M'lvcnzic, aged 50, pleaded guilty. Throughout the proceedings she sat on a chair sobbing. “This woman was betting at tho racecourse yesterday, and in a crowd of thousands of men and women had the impudence to stand in front of the totalizator and lay 1 tote ’ odds,” said Chief-detective Hammond. “There were women round her like a hive of bees. She’s repentant to-day, hut she was very brazen yesterday. She r ail tears this morning, and no sense. In her hag she had £4 18s in silver and a lot ol betting matched. She is liable to a fine of £2U.” “ Fined £10,” said Mr Cuttcn, Throwing her hands up in dramatio mannei'i the woman at once threatened self-destruction. Two police officials look her gently by the arms and Jed her outside. “I’ll do it,” said the woman excitedly, “Don’t be silly,” counselled one of her escorts. “ You’ll he just in time to have a bet on tho first race at Lllcrslio to-day.”
