INFLUENZA EPIDEMIC
THE AMERICAN OUTBREAK TWO THOUSAND DEATHS REPORTED Press Association—By Telegraph—Copyright WASHINGTON, December 27. (Received December 27, at 10 a.m.). Nearly 2,000 persons died of influenza or pneumonia in seventy-eight of the larger American cities last week. The Commerce Department reported that at the beginning, with 608 deaths in these cities for the week ended November 3, the list has grown. weekly until it has reached a total of 1,982 for the week ended December 22. Tho reports disclosed that influenza caused 710 deaths and pneumonia 1,272. In tho meantime tho United States Public Health Service has reported 240,502 new influenza cases in thirtynine States for tho same week. This figure was multiplied by five to give an estimated total of 1,202,810 new cases altogether, as it is officially believed that the State records comprise only one-fifth of the total number of cases.— Australian Press Association.
