A GAY SCENE The popularity of Karitane-as a seaside i'esoi't wqs demotisirafed yesterday Avliiin a' largo ’crowd 1 of people made the iburiiey to that'favoured spot to the carnival which (iiuF been arranged by a willing hand of permanent aiid summer rcsideiits; • ' ‘ , For some time past heavy seas had been playing havoc with the river frontage, and the Karitano Amenities Society set to work to devise some means of saving the beach. 'With the aid of Messrs |L and J. Y- Love, ol the Love Construction Cq., an esplanade Was formed, “and many other improvements ’ were effected. These improvements cost a considerable amount of money, and the residents organised the carnival With the. object of collecting funds for the' work that has already been done, and lor inrther improvements. The weather was warm, though the skv.was overcast, and the scene ou tlie beach, where a/ nnnibcr of stalls had been erected , was a'gay one. The conveners of the various stalls and their assistants had gone to a great deal of trouble to make their wares attractive, and in addition roll-downs, ole., were provided. Business generally was brisk, especially at the ice cream stall. The tide was at its height during the afternoon, and great amusement was caused by the aqua-planing and other water sports. Uher© were a number of canoes, motor ‘ launches, and speed boats on the river.
Tho conveners of the stalls were Refreshments, Mrs J. .Ilingland; ice creams and sweets, Mrs Parry Thomson i art stall, Mrs E. E. A.'Hewitt; badges, Mrs Eairbairn; programmes, Mr P. W. Curtis; 'amusements, Mr C. Conn. Mr Eairbairn was organiser; Mr R. C. Love, chairman of the Carnival Committee; Mr J. Heath, chairman of tho Regatta Committee; Mr A. Hart, chairman of tho Men’s Committee;' and Mrs Lavender, chairwoman of the Ladies’ Committee. Mr W. Stevenson was in charge of the children's treasure hunt, Mr Alex. Eraser in charge of the children’s sports, and Mr J. Y. Love looked after the , water sports. The president of the Carnival Committee was Mr Newburgh Lawson. A large number of visitors arrived by car, and 'the committee was much indebted to the police for the way in which they handled the traffic. Mr H. L. Patterson was in charge of the parking arrangements. The results of the water events are. as follow: Dinghy Race. —A. Moody 1. Ladies’ Canoe Race. —Miss L. Moody 1, Miss CL Stevenson 2. Bovs’ Canoo Race. —W. Vi alkcr 1. Launch Race.-—Renown 1, Intruder 2, Nomai >‘3. Aqua-planing.— Mon; A. Knights fomin) 1, <L M’Leau (•'ffmiu) 2, J. Lewis, (1. Lewis, J. Swan (dmin) 2; ladies—Miss W. Eairbairn' 1, Miss Soutor 2. The water fool hall resulted in a draw between J. Lewis’s team and C. Lewis’s team, each side' scoring two goals. The prizes were presented, at tho conclusion of Hie events, by Mr J. V. Love. The carnival was continued in Hie evening, the carnival area being brightly lighted. To-day tho fair was continued, tiro main attraction being the regatta, for which excellent entries were received. It will bo concluded to-night.
