Boxing Day Racing
Yesterday’s Meetings
Decrease in Totalisator Returns
At all the important meetings held throughout • the dominion, yesterday, the totalisator returns showed a decrease on those for Boxing Day of last year, due, no doubt in a measure to the wet weather, which prevailed in the North Island. The decrease was particularly noticeable at Auckland, where it amounted to close on £36,000.
OPENING DAY AT WINGATUI
a length. Carinthia, stopped badly over the last furling, and was tour : lengths away third, and Gnnease a pool' fourth. Investments,- £1,975 (last year £1,851 i). *.* * * Out of a held of eleven runners in the Salisbury Hack Handicap, Honeycombo being withdrawn, Star Haiti, with Emerson up, was made /a much better favourite than Tcmbroncy, who looked on the hip; side, with Arrowy and the Samson bracket, Money Peer and Pilaster, the next fancied. From a good lino Poterex and Pilaster were the first to show out, but when the hold had run a furlong Star Paid and Arrowy, both of whom started from the outside, had taken charge, and they led along the back from Poterex, Pago Boy, and Tardy. Poterex lost his position at the far turn, and Arrowy, on the outside, and Star Paid led up tbo hill from Page Boy, Tardy, and Poterex, who came again, was lying third to Star Paid and Arrowy at the last turn. Arrowy shook Star Paid off at the distance post, where Tcmbroncy and Tardy tackled him, and in a good finish Arrowy stayed on to beat Tembroney by three parts of a length, with Tardy half a length off third. Then followed Star Paid. Lady M'Kenna, Money Peer, and Paris. Both Page Boy and Poterex slopped badly over the last furlong. Arrowy was well handled by the apprentice, W. Hogan, who got him well mvay at the barrier, and easily gave his best riding performance to date. Investments. * * » * Only Jock o' Lantern was withdrawn from the Dunedin Handicap, for two-year-olds, and Medda and Dutch Money between them carried most of the investment;,, the former being first selection, and The Graphic was easily the best backed of the others. The start, irtjn more than one point of view, was Iho worst Mr M’lvor has even made on the course, ami Tin' (.'rapbic, Nedda, ami Stealth at once showed out. from the others. The Graphic led to inside the distance post, whore Nedda caught and beat her home by a short length. •Stealth was eve - two lengths away, third, and then came Captivate, Beading Bov, and Blue Metal. Investments, ,£2,873J- (£2,854). •* ■> * » All started in the Otago Handicap, and Pink Note, who won I,l l is race last year, was sent- out favourite, with Queer. Balboa nearly as well hacked, Poyal Saxon being ibe only other well fancied. . Alter a lot of (rouble Bom the favourite and Queen Balhoa at the start, the field was sent back lot a walk-up start, and from a good line Poyal Saxon and Buev Locket were the first to show out, ami Sauna gut about two lengths the worst of it. Going past (be mile post-. Poyal Saxon was a couple of lengths clo.ai ol Bney Bneket, Sarnia, and Queen Balboa, and at "the turn into the hack .stretch Sarnia ran np to Poyal Saxon, ilie pair beng ibreo lengths in front of Bney Bucket and Uiuvn Balboa At the tar turn Pink Mote- and Vaward were still last, and Poyal Saxon beaded -Sarnia up the? hill and led her into the straight, Buev Locket and Queen Balboa- being next, Unec in the straight Pink Note moved up and beading Poyal Saxon opposite the big stand, went on to win very easily by over two lengths from Queen Balboa, who beat Poyal Saxon by three parts of a length, Lucy Boeket being the same distance away, fourth. Sarnia finished last. Investments, £3,299 (£3,SUL). * * * * Only Busy Bad was withdrawn horn the Trial 'Stakes, and the Samson bracket, Singer and Wine Tray, was sent out a little better backed than Filosol, with Bouiso the only other well fancied. From a good line Wine Tray and Singer began the smartest, and led Miss Marco for a furlong, then the latter and Lady Bizziu joined Mine r l ray, and the three ran abreast round the top and into the straight from Hroadlield and Louise. At the distance post Filosol got an opening on the rails, and Salino Salar moved up on the outside. Filosol‘took charge a few strides from home, and won by a length Irom Salmu Salar, with Singer three-quarters of a length off third, and Broadlicld, Wine Tray, and On Watch next. The winner’stayed on much better than he did at Oamaru, and the win was a very popular one. Investments, £2,582; (£2,893).
SIS Till TI.TS HETURH TO fOilM Under purled, conditions, the Summer Meeting ol the Dunedin Jockey t.'lnlr was opened at Wingatui yesterday. Although the attendance did not appear to bo up to the usual standard, the public speculated Freely, £21,851 passing through the machine, as compared with .L'2d,999 on the first day last year. The racing was lull ol interest. Pink Note scored an easy win in the Otago Handicap, and that smart three year old, Rin-Tin-Tin, who made a good name For himself at Wingatui last year, just managed to get home by a, head From Circulation in the federal Handicap. Another close finish was seen in the Otokia Handicap, Apache gaining a verdict by a head over Camisader. The stewards were called together once during the day. The inquiry was Into J. T. Andrews (rider of Rin-Tin-Tin) hitting Circulation over the head as they raced down the straight. Alter hearing evidence, the stewards held that the hit was accidental, and no action was taken. The meeting was well conducted, but better starting has been witnessed at Wingatui. In the Dunedin Handicap, For two-year-olds, the starter released the barrier when halt the field was not ready. Consequently, many of the horses had their chances practically spoilt at the start. In the Otago Jlandicap, a long delay was experienced at the tapes, the public becoming impatient after the previous experience. Ultimately the field was walked in lor the start. In Ibe Federal Handicap Booster was withdrawn in favour of his stable companion, Black Duke, and Gay Sonnet was sent out a few pounds better hacked than Rin Tin Tin, with King Balboa, Circulation, and Coomassio the best hacked of the others. From a good start Money Mine was the first to show out, and led Circulation and Coomassie, but before a furlong Rin Tin Tin, who started from the second outside berth at the barrier, ran to the front, and led Circulation, Eaton Bells, and Money Mine round the failure, where King Balboa got knocked hack. Rin Tin Tin. still pulling hard, was two lengths in front of Circulation at the home turn, but the marc caught him just inside the distance post, and in a good finish Rin Tin Tin stayed on much better than at Winton, and won by a good head. King Balboa, Winga-. tin, and Black Duke were in lino three lengths away, and were placed in that order, with Gay Sonnet next. Investments, £2,622 (£3.015). An inquiry was held into the rider of Rin Tin Tin striking Circulation on the head with his whip in the straight. After hearing evidence it was decided that it was accidental, and no action taken. * * * * The field for the Burnside Hack ILrmlieap was reduced to eight by the withdrawal of Filosol, Stringbow, and Lady Lizzie; and -Proud .Knight, was sent out a good favourite, with Meadow Lark next, in demand, and Killorna and Waving Corn the best backed of tho ethers. Meadow Lark was first out, and led Waving Corn and Some Signal over the first furlong and a-half, but then gave way to Waving Corn and Proud Knight, ivho led Meadow Lark up the hill. At the turn into The straight, Meadow Lark got a good opening, and joined Waving Corn, the pair drawing right away from the field. Waving Corn, with an advantage of 191bs in weight, had the best of a good race home, and beat Meadow Lark by a long head. The four-year-old son of Roy Do Oro and Gold Queen went away from his mark quicker than anything else, and when AVrackler broke up and fell back he was close to St. Bridget; .From then on Roi L’Or had the race well in hand, and at the entrance to the straight he was doing his work with tho greatest of ease, with Kotuku Jack and Dundas Boy doing the best of the others., Roi'. L’Or won easing up by four lengths, hut there was a good tussle for second place, Dundas Boy coming along to get home by a length from Shadowland. The next to finish were Avenger and Billy Sea, who great speed over the last furlong. Kotuku Jack paced a level race, but he faded away over tho last furlong. Roi L’Or is one of the- best yourig horses in commission. The manner, of his win to-day stamps'him as a gelding likely to reach top-notch'company. ' At tho Forbury. Park Meeting some good offers were refused for Roi L’Or, who won a double there in convincing style.
