PUBLICATIONS RECEIVED

Wo have received from the Railways Department a copy of an illustrated booklet, ‘Freight by Rail,’ which explains briefly the advantages obtainable by the people of New Zealand in the use of tlfeir own railways for the safe, prompt, and economical transport of their goods. The contents include a time-table of the principal railway freight trains. The management states that it will welcome suggestions from the public for new issues of the book, which will be revised from time to time, as circumstances mnv require. A ‘The Scost Year Book for 192819°9,’ which appears in a very attractive ’ pictorial cover, again shows an advance on earlier issues. The section devoted to ‘ Recent Books of Special Interest to Scots ’ has been considerably extended, and is one of real interest. There is a world list of more than 1,200 Scottish societies—the interests of which it is the purpose of the Year Book to foster; and a chronological list is given of the meetings of Scottish associations in London. There are various articles on a. variety of Scottish topics, historical and otherwise, that will be read with interest. We have received from the publisher a copy of the December number of ‘ Life,’ an Australian magazine of fact and fiction. It is in all respects well up to its usual high standard. While it deals with many of the more serious phases of the world’s affairs, ‘ Life ’ is broad in its scope; and in it will be found an excellent assortment of stories, humorous articles, departments, etc.
