CHRISTMAS MUSIC

ORGAN RECITAL BY DR GALWAY A thoroughly enjoyable organ recital was given in the First Church last evening by Dr V. E. Galway. The programme selected was an appropriate one, and the composers whose works were presented were Handel, Guilmant, Beethoven,? BaHi, Brahms, Karg-Elert, Gigout, Gluck, and Mailly. Dr Galway opened with, two Christmas themes by Guilmant. Tlie treatment was artistic all through, tlie quieter theme being particularly impressive. Bho pastorale symphony from Handel’s oratorio ‘ £he Messiah’ was tho next solo to engage tlie attention of the organist.ii nd received ample justice at his hands. A complete change was then made to 1 Let the Bright Seraphim,’ from the oratorio ‘Samson,’ which was brilliantly performed. The quieter section was delicately treated, and a resumption made to the glorious outburst of fervour that is a feature of the work. Beethoven’s ‘ Romance in G. Minor’ was, to a large extent, a return to the placid in music, and received the refined treatment it demanded. Dr Galway then proceeded to entertain his audience with a number of choral • preludes. The firs* ws Bach’s 1 Adorn Thyself, My Soul,’ a meditative conception of great beauty, which was rendered with feeling. Brahm’s ‘ A Rose Breaks into Bloom followed, and was exquisitely played, while the final prelude was Karg-Elert’s ‘ Holy Night,’ into the rendering of which much devotional feeling was put. Both these selections were short and well presented. A ‘ Postlucle on Christmas Themes 2’ by Gigout was brilliantly given in the first instance, after which a change was made to music of a quiet, soothing character, the well-known carol ' Come, All Ye Faithful ' again being heard. Some of Gluck’s work was next presented, the selection being ‘ln Elysium’ (‘Orfeo’). The final number was Mailly’s ‘ -Marche Solonnelle,’ the majesty oT which was fully brought out by Dr Galway. Those present were priivleged to hear an hour’s organ music very much above the ordinary standard.
