SOUTHLAND'S GOOD START

MATCH WITH OTAGO B When rain put a stop to play, for the day yesterday ten minutes after the resumption in the afternoon of the match between Southland and Otago B, the former team already had a good total on, and several wickets in hand. Southland, whose tean is a good blending of youth and experience, made a splendid start on a good wicket at Carisbrook, three wickets being down for 210 runs when stumps had to bo drawn. Southland scored quickly as they were at the wickets only a little over two hours. The principal scorer for Southland was R. Cherry, the ex-Dunedin Club

and Otago representative player, who was unbeaten at the drawing of stumps with 102 t ’ bis credit. Cherry batted in Hue form, and knocked the Otago bowling all over the ground, bis bestscoring strokes being lusty drives and neat square cuts, Anderson, a youthful member of the side, was not mil, with -19 to bis credit, being particularly strong on the off side. Groves, the Sontliland (■;,plain, was going well when M‘Gregor beat liini with his score at 19. The bowling was lacking in sling, and much loose stuff was sent up during the morning. Torrance, as usual, bowled steadily, and though be did not ' get a wicket, Ids sixteen overs yielded | only 26 rims, Otago’s fielding was very j patchy, the returns to the wickets | being poor, and costing the home side | a good many rims. Southland's innings was opened by Groves nd Cherry, the former faring Niinnio. The first over was productive of byes and also a couple of singles, and alter Torrance had bowled a maiden Groves cut Niinnio stpiare for 1, the score reaching double figures, lie reached the leg boundary with the next ball, and was scoring faster than Cherry, who, however, collected a 4 and a 3 off successive balls from Nimmo, which brought the score into the 30’s. Shortly afterwards M‘Gregor replaced Niinnio, and with the score at 40, Groves, who had survived an appeal for Ibw, was bowled bv M‘Gregor. —4o—l—lo. Dalglish was the incomer, and began slowly, eventually driving M.‘Gregor to the on for a 3. Cherry began to score freely, the half-century appearing quickly. With the score at 62, Cameron replaced Torrance, whoso nine overs had produced II runs, and a few rims later Broetor replaced M‘Gregor. Ghcrry, however, continued to lay the wood on, and lie reached 40 with a couple of 4’s off Procter's first over. Three more 4’s- off the same bowler took Choity past his half-century, the over bringing him 15. in just over an hour the century appeared, and with the score at 104 Dalglish was caught bv Allan in the slips off Broetor,—lo4 —2—o. Diack partnered Cherry, but did not last Jong, though he went out off a difficult ball from Cameron, it did not appear to rise an inch from the pilch, and struck the bottom of the stumps. -113-3—o. Anderson became associated with Cherry, and both batsmen batted briskly, changes of bowling making no difference to the rate of scoring. When the luncheon adjournment was taken Cherry was one short of his century, and Anderson had 43 to his credit. The resumption saw Cherry roach his century amid applause, a single off Torranee bringing Ids 100 up. With the .score at 210 heavy rain made it necessary to abandon play for the day. tail's:--SOUTHLAND. First Innings. T. G. Groves b M‘Gregor 19 R. Cherry not out 102 G.
