RAILWAY TRAFFIC
LONG DISTANCE TRAINS PATRONISED Rain, interfered with the suburban traffic yesterday, but in the case of the long distance trains, in which tho ordinary timetable was adhered to passenger traffic was heavy. The first express for Christchurch carried 450 passengers, and tho 11.34 had aboard- 500. The south line was just as well patronised, and the 8.35 express for Invercargill had a complement of 400 passengers aboard. A special, leaving at 9 a.m., toek 250 passengers to Gore, and .a special for Palmerston was also packed. _ The express from Christchurch, arriving here at 4.25, consisted of fourteen cars, and carried 450 passengers, while it left for Invercargill with eleven cars and 350 passengers. The express from Invercargill which reached here at 6.23, had twelve cars and 300 passengers, but the second express from Christchurch was light, comprising only seven cars and 150 passengers. The 8.35 a.m. train to Gore this morning carried 350 passengers, and the 9 a.m. to Invercargill steamed out with 250 passengers on board. Three hundred people travelled to Christchurch by tho 8.40 a.m., and 250 passengers wont by the 9.5 a.m. to Christchurch. The 9.15 tram to Oamani took nearly 400 passengers nwir, and a special to Palmerston earned about JUO passengers, principally bound for the Karitane regal ta.
