AN EARLY START

£2,090 GRANT FOR UNEMPLOYMENT ■ ' YORK ARRANGED IN DUNEDIN This, morning the mayor (Hon. W. B. Taverner) and members of the City Council arranged "the schedule of-works which it is proposed to carry out with thegrant of £2,000 which the council has received from the Government for that purpose. A condition of the grant is that the works have to be approved by. the Public Works Department, but in order to obviate delay the mayor has arranged with the Minister of Public Works that the approval of the local district public works engineer shall be sufficient, instead of sending to Wellington. It is hoped that the schedule of works which was drawn up to-day will be approved in time fo ra start to be made on some of the work on Thursday of this wedk. The schedule includes top-dressing, levellinli and turfing of portion of the Oval, work similar to that which has recently been done to the northern portion of the ground, and other works under the jurisdiction of the works department in various parts of the city. As the grant of £2.000 must all be spenf-in labour, the works which have, been selected are those which will involve a comparatively small outlay in material, the cost of which will be borne by the corporation. Standard rates are to be paid on the works. Application for work has to be made through the local Government 'Labour Bureau, preference to fie given to married men with dependents. All applicants must have a certificate from a ratepayer certifying that they have resided in the city for the past six . months. £SOO of the £2,000 grant is to be expended on the Oval.
